1991 Audi 200 Avant 5 speed

With Toyota making unintended acceleration popular again, let’s check out the car that started the whole craze back in the 1980s: The Audi 100/200. After the 60 Minutes episode aired claiming sudden acceleration led to deaths and injuries, Audi’s US market share fell drastically, almost leading to their demise in this country.

All of this aside, these Audi were very futuristic upon their debut in 1982 and lived on with a cult following in Japan, as the Audi 100 was rehashed as a mid size executive sedan by FAW (First Automobile Works). Here we have an example of the rather rare Avant, especially given it is equipped with a manual transmission.

1991 Audi 200 Avant 20V Turbo

* 5 speed manual transmission
* Locking differential
* 5 cylinder turbo motor DOHC
* TAP ECU upgrade
* Vehicle is in very good condition inside and outside
* Motor runs strongly with no unusual noises
* Synthetic oil changes
* Service history records
* Smoke free

The car needs a fuel tank repair. A temporary patch is in place now. The mid muffler needs to be replaced due to a small hole.

This car is extremely solid. It runs great; the turbo charger makes good boost and pulls hard. The buyer will not be disappointed.

For a car with 180,000 miles, it seems pretty well looked after and could prove to be a useful and cheap hauler for someone, provided the repairs can be taken care of economically.

    Where’s the link to the ad?

    This is more than just rare. The 1991 200’s got the 20v rather than the 10v I-5 turbos. If this is running right, it’s a 170 mph wagon.

    These motors were capable of hundreds of horsepower with bigger turbos and more fuel. Essentially the same engine as in the early S-cars, IMSA and Group B’s. Chipped on stock turbos they put down around 260-280 hp. Way, way cooler and more reliable than the 2.7TT’s in the B5 S4’s.

    Aside from electrical issues, they’re incredibly well made. My dad had one that was still on the original clutch and head gasket at 225K miles and it was an absolute beast from 2nd gear to however fast you needed to go.

    No bids on it. Neat wagon. I saw one a few weeks ago and noticed how long they are. I doubt the one I saw had a Turbo and manual gearbox. Hope it finds a good home.

    Just a heads-up the FAW Hongqi that used the Audi 5000/ 100 designs was built under license from Audi in China. It’s a Chinese company that has made this car through the 2000s; most do not use Audi engines. It wasn’t really a re-hash, just a way for cash-stripped Audi to make money in the though late 80s, early 90s and an opportunity for a Chinese manufacturer to have some groundwork for a design.
