1991 Volkswagen Cabriolet Etienne Aigner Edition

The Volkswagen Cabriolet is a car that has enjoyed popularity with women, but if there was one particular version of the venerable open roofed VW that could have increased the appeal amongst the fairer sex it would have been this car, the Mk1 Etienne Aigner Edition Cabriolet. Volkswagen created a plethora of special edition models over the years, but the Mk2 went a bit overboard with this tradition, with well over 50 different limited edition models offered over the course of the production run. The special edition craze was a bit less widespread amongst the Cabriolet, which was sold in Mk1 form alongside the Mk2. A few versions such as the Wolfsburg, CC and Carat appeared along with the Etienne Aigner, which was available in Mangrove Green, Midnight Blue, or Bordeaux Red, as we see on this example for sale in New Jersey.

1993 BMW 850Ci 6-speed manual

If one word could describe the 8 series, I think it would be “masculine.” This black 850Ci for sale in California adds on to that aura with the V12 engine, 6-speed manual and beloved M-parallel wheels. With the sleek low hood, concealed headlamps and flared haunches, this coupe has a stealthy look about it. Short of exotic Italian machinery, there aren’t a lot of cars from the modern era that pair a V12 with a manual gearbox. For a while in the 1990s, however, BMW was more than happy to provide this drivetrain combination to the enthusiast who just wanted to go fast.

1985 Porsche 944 – REVISIT

The 1985 Porsche 944 we featured last month has been relisted at $1,000 more, strangely enough. Still, if there’s some flexibility on the reserve, this could turn out to be a water-cooled bargain.

It doesn’t always take a lot of money to have fun. However, in an era where Volkswagen Mk1 Golfs and GTIs and your garden variety BMW E30s are trending upward, it may seem a bit daunting to maximize your classic car dollar. But there’s always those old standbys, and one that ranks high on my list is the Porsche 944. If you opt for the “basic” version, you can keep the initial outlay reasonable while allowing room for upgrades and repairs. 1989 BMW 635CSi

It’s pretty amazing when you consider there was a 14 year absence between the first and second generation 6 series models in the BMW lineup. Sure, the 8 series did its best to plug the gap in the 1990s, but for some reason, it didn’t catch on quite as well as the shark nosed E24. While the new 6 isn’t the most horrible vehicle ever designed, I think it’s safe to say that the old 6 will probably age better than the more modern version. Let’s take a minute to look a 1989 635CSi, the final year of E24 production.

1988 Volvo 480ES with 38k miles

As one who enjoys an oddball motor, I get distracted every time I see a Volvo 480ES. Sort of a hatchback with a bit of shooting brake in its profile, this car was the spiritual successor to the P1800ES of the 1970s. The 480 was an odd duck in the Volvo lineup during the 1980s and into the mid 1990s, manufactured in The Netherlands at the factory that gave us the Daf. This would be the first front-wheel drive Volvo and injected a sporty attitude into the model range at a time where the company was still designing cars with a straightedge and #2 pencil. This 480ES for sale near Hannover, Germany has under 40,000 miles on the clock, making it quite a rarity as few are left in this condition.
