There’s been cars throughout history that have been way ahead of their time. The Chrysler Airflow, Citroën DS and NSU Ro80 are but a few examples of vehicles that were revolutionary in their time and, at least in the case of the Citroen and NSU, look almost modern to this day. At first, I thought this Porsche 928 was an early 1990s example, but this was a first year example of the 928S4, a 1987 model for sale in St. Louis. Just think, for a moment, about the cars that were hanging around on the showroom floor in 1987. The Mercedes-Benz R107 SL was still alive and kicking, as was the Volkswagen Quantum. Branch out past German iron, and you could still order a brand new AMC Eagle. Park this similar vintage 928S4 next to any of these cars and it’s easy to mistake it from another era, let alone a vehicle introduced in the late 1970s.

Twenty years on, you still see plenty of W124 Mercedes-Benzes pounding the pavement. Christened the E class upon its introduction in 1986, this range had a monumental task of taking over from one of the most legendary Mercedes models of all time, the W123. But the W124 became a legend in its own right, with an expansive choice of models that included a sedan, coupe, four-seater cabriolet, the manic 500E/E500 and this car, the estate. This final year E320 Estate for sale in California is a one-family vehicle that has covered under 100,000 miles.

1 CommentThe Porsche 911 is a versatile vehicle when it comes to motorsport. Rallying, LeMans, even the International Race of Champions employed the venerable rear-engined sports car in competition. This 1975 911 3.0 RSR is a tribute to a 911 campaigned by famous Porsche mechanic, dealer and racer Vasek Polak. It was Polak who, in 1959, opened the first Porsche only dealership in the United States. That RSR was campaigned successfully in IMSA in 1975 and would be raced until 1981, racking up more victories along the way. This 911 3.0 RSR is a recreation of that impressive machine, on offer in Southern California.

1 CommentFor all the air-cooled Porsches that we feature, there is still one outlier that is the ne plus ultra when it comes to P-cars for me. The 968 Club Sport. This was another one of those forbidden fruits to US customers, but a formula which enthusiasts copied in earnest by either cobbling together a few of the more performance oriented options available at the time, such as the M030 option package, or by way of the aftermarket. Out of the box, the Club Sport was ready to hit the track, with about 222 pounds shed from the curb weight by way of deletion of luxury trimmings and complimented with a more aggressive suspension setup. This Club Sport for sale in Maryland has been worked over a bit to make it even more fearsome for track days.

Comments closedEvery decade there is a handful of cars that arrive on the scene that have the right stuff to permanently leave a mark on the automotive landscape. The Mercedes-Benz 300SL, Mk1 Volkswagen GTI and E30 BMW M3 are but a handful of motors that have shifted over into the icon category. Their respective manufacturers have tried to rekindle the magic of these vehicles over the years, much to their credit, but somehow, these cars will be frozen in time as some of the greats. This is the case with this car, the W124 Mercedes-Benz 500E/E500. Mercedes has come out with a number of AMG tuned E class sedans in the past two decades, but none seems to capture the hearts and minds like this super sedan with Porsche DNA. Interestingly enough, another icon of the 1990s was built in the same factory as this car, right after 500E/E500 production ended: the Audi RS2 Avant.
This particular 500E for sale in Georgia belies its age and the miles it has covered, looking truly immaculate in Brilliant Silver.
