Mercedes-Benz has stayed the course in offering coupe versions of its mid-sized and large fleet. While not as flashy as some of the competition, the W124 E-Class coupe of the 1980s and 1990s offered the consumer a decidedly conservative choice when it came to personal luxury. This was perfectly acceptable by established customers of the brand, as they weren’t seeking the radical styling cues and glitterball details so common in the lineup today. This 1991 300CE for sale in New Mexico is a one owner, low mileage example that is perfect for playing out your old money fantasies.

If you summer in The Hamptons, frequent Cape Cod or wander around an Ivy League campus, you’ll notice a curious thing if you are a car enthusiast. The monied folk often eschew the ubiquitous luxury SUV for the kind of car we see here, the luxury estate car. Many of them are available with all-wheel drive, like this 1998 Mercedes-Benz E320 Estate for sale in Texas. If an SUV is a bit too over the top for you, but you still need the cargo capacity and all-wheel drive versatility, this low mileage W210 E class is a good compromise.

2 CommentsA friend of mine emailed me a few days ago asking for my advice on hybrid vehicles, specifically the Honda Accord and Ford Fusion. They may be good enough vehicles, but these are models I haven’t paid much attention to. Much like the ubiquitous SUV that towers over my Cooper S in traffic, I don’t have an opinion on these cars. I just don’t give them the time of day, as they do not suit my needs. But, if people would like to rephrase the question around fuel economy, I have one word: diesel.
There are a good amount of new generation, clean diesel models available to US consumers these days, from Volkswagen TDIs to Audi A8s to Chevrolet Cruzes. But if you don’t mind dabbling in the modern classics for a bit, the W124 Mercedes-Benz E class was a near constant in the market when it came to the diesel engine, when few manufacturers were employing the technology. This late model 1995 E300 for sale in Portland, Oregon has 70,000 miles, mere childs’ play when it comes to the longevity of Mercedes’ diesel engines.

5 CommentsTwenty years on, you still see plenty of W124 Mercedes-Benzes pounding the pavement. Christened the E class upon its introduction in 1986, this range had a monumental task of taking over from one of the most legendary Mercedes models of all time, the W123. But the W124 became a legend in its own right, with an expansive choice of models that included a sedan, coupe, four-seater cabriolet, the manic 500E/E500 and this car, the estate. This final year E320 Estate for sale in California is a one-family vehicle that has covered under 100,000 miles.

1 CommentEvery decade there is a handful of cars that arrive on the scene that have the right stuff to permanently leave a mark on the automotive landscape. The Mercedes-Benz 300SL, Mk1 Volkswagen GTI and E30 BMW M3 are but a handful of motors that have shifted over into the icon category. Their respective manufacturers have tried to rekindle the magic of these vehicles over the years, much to their credit, but somehow, these cars will be frozen in time as some of the greats. This is the case with this car, the W124 Mercedes-Benz 500E/E500. Mercedes has come out with a number of AMG tuned E class sedans in the past two decades, but none seems to capture the hearts and minds like this super sedan with Porsche DNA. Interestingly enough, another icon of the 1990s was built in the same factory as this car, right after 500E/E500 production ended: the Audi RS2 Avant.
This particular 500E for sale in Georgia belies its age and the miles it has covered, looking truly immaculate in Brilliant Silver.
