When they launched the original Quattro, Audi redefined how performance could be packaged. With supercar performance but day to day practicality, the Quattro established a niche that made Audi unique amongst not only German manufacturers, but indeed the automotive world. Since then, however, the idea of all-wheel drive and turbocharged platforms have spread not only to sister companies Porsche and Volkswagen, but indeed to Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Porsche, Opel and even outside Germany to Japan. So Audi once again redefined its packaging; in the case of the TT, they brought expensive styling to the masses, and in the case of the R8, they brought supercar performance and packaging to a 911 budget. But it’s not just Audi that has raised its game; tuning firms are held to much higher standards then they were in the 1980s. Go back and look at some early Callaway turbo setups, for example, and you’ll see what was cutting edge in the 1980s – levels of fit and finish that just aren’t acceptable today, along with driving characteristics not suitable to most owners. Computerized engine management has transformed what is possible in the tuning world to the point where today’s packages often retain OEM-levels of driveability with otherworldly performance on tap. Two great examples of this can be found in HPA’s turbocharged Audi TT and Heffner’s twin-turbocharged Audi R8:

2005 Audi HPA TT 550

When you think of great tuning companies for German cars, most of them reside in the motherland – AMG (pre-Daimler takeover), Alpina, AC Schnitzer, Abt, Ruf, and Techart. Over the past two decades, a few U.S. based tuners have raised their game to match some of the German offerings, such as Dinan, Turner, Active Autowerke and Renntech. But around 2004, a new kid popped into the tuning scene in a major way, and he was from Canada. HPA stunned the tuning world at SEMA in that year with its twin-turbo R32, a car that would go on to be featured and much loved in Gran Turismo 4. What was so shocking? How about 450 horsepower, 0-60 in under 4 seconds, and a sticker price of $80,000. Car and Driver proclaimed the conversion was good enough to look like it came from the factory. HPA has since gained notoriety for building some monstrously powerful Volkswagen and Audi products, but because they’re not in the Ivy League of tuners and are somewhat obscure, you can get some pretty outlandish performance for not much money. Today’s HPA TT 550 is a good example of this performance bargain:

No, you’re not reading the advertisement incorrectly. That’s 540 horsepower. Want an R8 V10 but $100,000 shy of the asking price for a used one? Here’s your car. The performance produced by these cars is simply staggering, and the ask price for the car is only about half of what the price of the twin turbo conversion runs. At $22,000, this car sure looks like a ton of performance for the money. Without a doubt, that performance comes at a price – it’s not very surprising that the first DSG transmission only lasted 10,000 miles. Still, though, with a 6 speed conversion, some inviting looking Recaros, and enough torque to light up all 4 sticky tires, it’s not surprising this car has gotten some use. I would expect some large repair bills looming in the not-too-distant future. I’m not a huge fan of either the RS6 wheels or the headlight treatment on this car, but both of those are pretty easily remedied. Throw the OEM lights back in and a set of BBS LMs on there and call it a day!

Would I buy this car? Well, that’s a very interesting question. There was point when the early Callaway and Dinan turbo cars weren’t worth much more than a stock car; but over the past few years appreciation for them has grown and good examples now command a premium. Go back and look at those cars, and the fit and finish of the twin turbo conversion on this car is significantly better. Those cars also required some serious maintenance to go along with their raised performance. Will the future hold a similar fate for the HPA cars? Only time will tell and it may be an expensive journey. But you may get in on the bottom floor of one of the best kept performance secrets out there, and you’d be on the express elevator for sure.

Scary Twin-Turbo R32 for sale

I remember reading about the HPA twin-turbo upgrade on a VW New Beetle when I was in middle school.  It blew my mind in many ways.  Then the MkIV R32 rolled around and they started working their magic on that.  Heaven, BiTurbo R32 is thy name.  HPA does extremely nice installations, creating a driveable monster out of one of my favorite cars.  This one is juiced up even more than I’d heard of before, with some 500hp at the WHEELS.

This exact package is truly one of my dream cars.  I’d take this over most Italians (288 GTO exempted), and it’s just right up there with a Turner Motorsports E30 M3 2.5 or RS4 wagon as the best thing possible.  Just epic.

At first I thought the HPA on the hood was a bit much, but the fact that it’s clear-coated over the carbon hood with the rest body-color is a nice touch.  This guy has done truly everything to make this the most insanely awesome R32 possible.  $85k is steep, sure, but it’s a proven turbo system on a great car with all the requisite upgrades to make it so much more than just some tuner car.  I’m jealous of the owner’s resources and ambition for making this car a reality.
