Longtime reader Sam was selling his “Blue Colonel” Rabbit Pickup in Portland but saw another extremely clean Caddy for sale at the same time. It looks like the Blue Colonel has sold, but this beautiful little LX – leatherette and wood dash included – is still looking for a new home. It’s covered 134k gentle miles and spent most of last 15 years in a temperature controlled garage. Everything looks original in the best of ways, including the clean engine compartment. $6k is a pretty common number for diesel Caddys, but we’ll see if this excellent gas pickup can swing that much too.

Year: 1980
Model: Rabbit Pickup LX
Engine: 1.6 liter inline-4
Transmission: 5-speed manual
Mileage: 134,000 mi
Price: $6200 OBO
This is a super clean 1980 vw caddy Lx edition. It has been in a temperature controlled garage for the last 15 years and has been driven very little. Truck has 134000 original miles on it. Also has a very clean interior. The motor the original 1.6 and runs pretty good. Not too many trucks like this one left.
Most of the nice Rabbit Pickups have at least some level of modification, updates, or rough spots. This one looks just about perfect. Hopefully it can find another steward to keep it well cared for and stock.
Many thanks again to Sam for the tip!

I found this trucks near twin about 12 years ago, also in Portland.
Instead of red it was white, but had the same topper. Same spec as this truck, gas, 5speed, LX trim.
Super clean like this, no dash cracks, no tears, no rust, original paint, bed had no damage, etc.
Great driving little truck. Got 35 mpg, could haul a decent amount and always got comments when I had it out.
Sold it due to a move. One of the few vehicles I regret selling and the only vehicle my wife wishes I hadn’t sold.
Note 1980 was the only year with this front end and dash board. 1981 and later Rabbits had the turn signals next to the headlamps and the square dash.
I just purchased it for 6K U.S. and has been imported into Vancouver, BC, Canada. It’s going to be restored to it’s former luster, in the original Ketchup red colour, no hot-rodding here, just an as original as possible looking ute. It’s looking handsome as is, but it does need some tlc. I’m very pleased with it.
Henry – Congratulations on a nice purchase!
This one stuck in my head after seeing it here. I watched it on CL for a couple months. Finally decided I should try to buy it. Called the seller and he had just sold it.
Glad it went to a good home.
Thank you Poorhouse, I appreciate your well wishes. I’m sorry I was ahead of you. We are all in this together. Greetings from Vancouver, BC.
