2001 BMW M Roadster

The roadster formula is fairly straightforward: take a small 2-seater, strip away most of the unnecessary items, add an engine, and go. In many cases these were minimalist sports cars designed to keep their drivers as closely connected to every sensation of driving as possible and most made do with smaller engines, relying upon the car’s light weight to enable capable acceleration. Some, however, went a different route retaining the light weight chassis but strapping in a larger, more powerful, motor. The AC Cobra desired by Carroll Shelby was one of the first and most notable examples and ever since enthusiasts have clamored for cars that continue in the tradition of the small car with a powerful engine. The car featured here follows that lead: a Steel Gray Metallic 2001 BMW M Roadster located in Maryland, just outside of Washington, DC. With reasonably low miles and the highly desirable S54 engine this particular Roadster is sure to offer plenty of spirited top-down motoring with a healthy dose of horsepower.

1981 Volkswagen Scirocco S

Before the second generation Scirocco arrived in 1982, the original Giugiaro sport coupe would be given a sendoff by way of a special model, the “S.” These were available in three colors, Cosmos Silver Metallic, Cirrus Gray Metallic and Mars Red with red piping on the bumpers and different seat trim and came equipped with the 5-speed manual gearbox. As usual, there seems to be a good amount of clean Mk1s coming out of the woodwork, but early Sciroccos are a tough find indeed. This one for sale in California in Cirrus Gray Metallic is a claimed three owner car and from the paint to the interior trim looks to be all there and in rather tidy nick.

Tuner Tuesday: Extreme 1989 Volkswagen Cabriolet

$_57 (6)

Convertibles are usually met with skepticism by enthusiasts, but there are always exceptions. For me, driving a Z8 helped me change my tune, followed by the decidedly non-German but incredible experience of hooning a Miata. When you live in Hawaii, it’s hard to imagine hiding from the sun and rising scenery of the islands, and VW Cabriolets are a very popular choice. Commonly associated with teenage girls, today’s cab comes with Berg Cup fender flares and enough performance upgrades to terrify teenagers and prompt families to hide their kids and hide their wives. A turbocharged 16V helps it back up the crazy flares and charge up the mountains like a true Berg Cup competitor. It’s a little out there, but to be honest, I’m kind of in love with this car. A serious rollcage counteracts the lost rigidity and fits in perfectly. The bodykit is just so out there that it works for me and I love the cream color. If I were to buy a convertible, I think I want it to be this one.

2001 BMW M5

How do you like your M car? Loud, like the Dakar Yellow E36 M3 Sedan we featured last week, or perhaps a bit more subdued like this E39 M5 in the rarely seen Oxford Green? This M5 for sale in Connecticut is a three owner car with a tan leather interior that provides a warm look akin to an English drawing room. There’s been a lot of snow late in the season this year (at least for us East Coasters), but it’s never too late to contemplate that little bit of fun you promised yourself for the warmer months.
