1993 Volkswagen Corrado SLC VR6

For many enthusiasts, the Corrado SLC VR6 is still the ultimate Volkswagen – but even if it’s not, you can respect what a solid piece of engineering it was. The Corrado was really a Halo car for Volkswagen in many ways, and while the G60 motor was a bit underwhelming for the weight of the Corrado, the VR6 provided the right soundtrack and power output to rightly place the coupe amongst one of the best front wheel drive cars ever produced. These superb 2-doors have never really gotten very cheap, but that’s generally been good for enthusiasts now – by being a premium product, the Corrado has in general been kept out of hands that were incapable of keeping them in good condition. What we get, then, are occasionally a great example of a coupe that really performed on the level of many sports cars, but still offers Volkswagen practicality and enough room for 4:

1969 Porsche 912 Targa

Typically when we feature a 912 it’s because we hope to highlight its relative value compared to a similar vintage 911. These are, after all, basically a 911 design but with a flat-4 engine rather than the 911’s flat-6 and tend to come far cheaper. Well, what about the other end of the 912 spectrum: the pristine, collector-quality, 912? Like the 911, a really nice 912 can command a fairly high price, though still far short of a 911 of comparable quality. The example featured here is a Polo Red 1969 Porsche 912 Targa, located in Connecticut, with black interior. 1969 was the last year for the 912 (not counting it’s brief reappearance in 1976 as the 912E) and, like the 911, it featured a slightly longer wheelbase than in previous years. We don’t come across very many Targas from these years (whether 911 or 912) so it’s always nice to see where the design began. This particular car is the hard-window Targa and appears to be very low-mileage, though just how low is a little uncertain.

1977 BMW 630CSi

I’ve said a few times that the prettiest 6-series in my mind are the earliest examples and the very last, mid-88 refreshed cars. But in terms of pure beauty, my vote still goes to the early, uncluttered Bracq design. Certainly the E24 looked much heavier and not quite as elegant as the E9 it replaced, but it has its own character and was a quite handsome design in its own right. The sweeping roof line carries perfectly into the falling trunk, and in front the chiseled headlight panel echoed images of the creatures that would become the namesake of this model – the “Shark”:
