The late 1990s was, in my opinion, a watershed for executive sedans. The much revered BMW E38 7 series was about halfway into its production lifespan, offering up what was arguably one of the best designs the company has ever released. Then we had the Audi A8. In the wake of the V8, which was a bit of a sales disappointment, Audi was back with this all aluminum luxury saloon and even offered a hot version – the S8 – for those who wanted the ultimate high performance luxury express. Then there was the W140 Mercedes-Benz S-class. Having been introduced in 1992, this was a car on its way out, but it still had some fight left in it. Compared to the BMW and Audi, the Mercedes had rather brutal, monolith appearance to it. It was still, however, a supremely capable automobile. The example we see here for sale in Texas is the popular S500 with the 5.0 liter V8. In black over black leather, this completes the iconic look for this CEO express.

The W124 Mercedes-Benz E-class convertible isn’t exactly what you would consider a sporting drive. It’s a thoroughly competent cruiser and can handle itself in the twisties, but this is a car meant to cosset you as you motor, top-down and enjoy the passing scenery at a more relaxed pace. It is, simply, a car to be seen in. Our reader Walker spotted this imported 1993 300CE-24 Cabriolet equipped with a 5-speed manual gearbox, one of a handful that were equipped as such. Imported in 2001 and brought up to US specs, it’s available in Richmond, Virginia with just over 100,000 miles on the clock.

Comments closedE28 M5 values are continuing to climb, and examples that are good but flawed are now going for amounts that, until recently, were reserved for nearly perfect, low-mileage beauties. Many enthusiasts and publications have seen this coming for a while, but this past year has seen the largest jump yet. Today, we have two M5s that have covered a little over 150k miles – certainly not spring chickens. We’ve seen well-traveled M5s go for over $30k, but exceptional care and appearance seemed to rationalize such a high price. Both of today’s cars have their flaws, signifying that the 80s ///M appreciation is spreading far and wide.

Comments closedThe car we see here, a Wimbledon Green 1994 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Coupe, comes with a high degree of excitement along with some annoyance. The excitement comes from the color. These are the sorts of cars we are always thankful Porsche produced. Unfortunately, this seller has chosen to provide only 2 pictures of the car’s exterior. Yeah. So we’ll have to go by the possibilities. This 964 should be about as pristine as a second-hand 911 can get given that it has not even traveled 9K miles, and the few pictures we do see show a car in excellent shape. Wimbledon Green (along with some other lighter greens) is one of the few colors where I strongly prefer a black interior. I really like the contrasting darkness the black provides and on the car here the interior looks in particularly good condition and is very capable of providing that contrast. We have been coming across quite a few extremely low mileage 911s lately perhaps owing to the market increases we’ve seen and owners hoping to see just how much value they can get for their collectibles.

1 CommentThe E23 7 series always struck me as bit of an oddity in the history of BMW models. This luxury sedan didn’t have as much presence as the E3 “New Six” that preceded it, nor did it have the option of serious size and muscle as the V12 powered E32 750iL that followed it. This has planted the E23 in relative obscurity amongst collectors, as it was never quite as visible as its domestic rival, the Mercedes-Benz W126 S-class. Thus, it is a bit of a bargain in comparison to other period BMW models. This 1984 733i represents the last year for this particular model in the US, succeeded by the 735i the following year before this generation would disappear altogether after the 1987 model year.
