The 1980s and early 1990s rare DTM inspired car market is hot right now. The Audi Ur-Quattro now costs more than a loaded up Honda Accord and a BMW E30 M3 in nice shape is about as much as a starter home. The next car that’s on the rise is the Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16. For years this was a $5,000-8,500 car. Not anymore. Prices have more than doubled. But this post isn’t about that the lowly 2.3-16. This is about the 2.5-16 Evolution II. Â The king W201. About a month ago Paul featured aÂ 1991 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evolution IIÂ that was listed for $279,000. If you missed out on that one, don’t worry, this 2.5-16 Evolution II for sale outside of London is your second chance at DTM gloryÂ â€” if you have $333,352.
Ten years agoÂ Audi celebrated their 25 years of Quattro by giving the United States (Sorry Canada,Â the bumpersÂ didn’t meet Canadian low-speed crash test standards)Â a special delivery of 250 B7 S4 special â€˜25quattroâ€™ editions. All painted in a typically German Avus Silver color, these cars got DTM inspired front and rear bumpers that wear non-functional brake ducting and finished off with an aero-styleÂ lower rear valance (with a red tow hook hiding below it) and a carbon fiberÂ trunk spoiler with matching frontÂ splitter. The wheels are again DTM inspired with a 15 spoke design pattered after OZ Racing but ironically made by long Audi supplier Ronal. On the inside, your typical full Recaro setup is there with two-tone seats inÂ jet-gray as well as some carbon fiber trim and ‘1 of 250’ shift knob. All said and done, Audi gave it’s fans a nice cosmetic package to different from the rest of the B7 S4s. Unfortunately, the 25quattro received no performance upgrades outside of some different exhaust tips to give you a slightly more aggressive sound, but the car did receive the revised more rearward biased drive system also found in the RS4. Being only 1 of 250, this 25quattro located inÂ California might fulfill your appetite for a rare V8 Audi without stepping into RS4 territory.
A few days ago I featured aÂ 1981 Mercedes-Benz 500SELÂ which I called a ”money is no object” car. To walk into the dealer 28 years later with that same goal of a ”money is no object” you have your choice of the S63 AMG or the S65 AMG, which is about the same kind of hard decision like picking between Jennifer Aniston or Angelina Jolie. Both are going to cost you a ton of money, (about $133,000 for the S63 and a whopping $198,000 for the S65), both are going to attract a fair amount of attention and both might be a risk to have long-term. But all that be damned, when you are with them, you are going to feel like a million bucks. If this is the kind of feeling you want â€” as well as maybe a little bit of riskÂ â€” then this the 2009 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG located in centralÂ Massachusetts might just for you.
This site features a fair amount of W126 S-Class. Usually they are the frugal 300SE or the loaded up 560SEL that still make excellent drivers and offer a ton of value. Every once in a blue moon, I come across an S-Class that was a ”money is no object” car. Usually these cars have options that you never seen let alone on a car manufactured 35 years ago. This 1981 500SEL located in the San Francisco area is one of those cars.
We don’t see a ton of pre-war Mercedes featured on this site, but when you do it’s something you might find on theÂ 18th green of Pebble Beach. ThisÂ W136 cabrio can still give you pre-war Mercedes lure without the seven-figure price tag.
In 2007, Audi fans had a giant reason to celebrate. No, they weren’t jumping for joy because their insurance company finally sent them their check for their B5 S4 that was stolen for the fourth time. Audi was bringing back the RS4. Even better, it was coming to North America. After taking a sabbatical in the B6 generation, the legendary RS4 was coming. 6-speed manual. 420-hp direct-injection V8. 8000 rpm redline. 58/42-percent front-to-rear weight distribution. Flared fenders. Honeycomb grille. This was it. Carbon-buildup be damned and yeah, it wasn’t the avant. This was it. Finally the AWD super-sedan was coming. Nine years later if you are still dreaming about the RS4 without the nearly $70,000 price tag, this example in Michigan might be right up your alley.
The W124 Mercedes-Benz Estate is a favorite around this site and personally one of my favorite cars that were ”honest”. They had the enormous task of following the legendary W123 Estates and giving Mercedes wagon buyers just a little more. It had to have the same quality of the W123 but be a little faster, a little more comfortable, hold a little more and live up to the standard that Mercedes was known at the time. Without saying, the W123 Estate is still king in the used Mercedes wagon market, but if you don’t want to spend a bunch of money on a car that is over 30 years-old at it’s youngest version, the W124 300TE is still a great buy. This example on the beaches of New Jersey can still give you everything you want from a Mercedes-Benz Estate.
Often when we feature the classic W113 MercedesÂ Pagoda, it’s an example that has low-miles, flawless paint, an interior that is pristine and spends most of the time tucked away, rarely to see the light of day. With these cars now regularly fetching six figures, I don’t blame the owners for protecting their investments. Infrequently do we see a Pagoda you can feel okay about using on a regular basis to enjoy while still maintaining it’s beauty and stature. This 1971 280SL located in Atlanta can offer all that.
