1979 Mercedes-Benz 280S

Base model luxury sedan. A contradiction in terms, no? But, as the old saying goes, the world needs ditch diggers, too. And so it goes with the Mercedes-Benz S class. One model is going to have to be labeled as the “entry-level” model, so to speak. In the 1970s, that would be the 280S, a W116 with a dual carb version of the M110 inline-6. While not sold on these shores, naturally a few found their way over here via private importers. This one for sale in Florida is an eye popping shade of Signal Red with matching hubcaps and sans sunroof that comes with an interesting history.

1977 Volkswagen Rabbit VR6 24v swap

It’s a good week for Mk1 Volkswagen Rabbits. After featuring a remarkably well kept 1982 Rabbit L Diesel from a reader yesterday, here we have this 1977 Rabbit with a 24V VR6 swap. I remain firm in my assessment that the VR6 engine is one of the best engines of the last three decades. I’ve driven a few later model Volkswagens with this lump under the hood and the smooth power and awesome sound is enough to hook you every time. A VR6 swap into what we would now consider vintage VWs is nothing new, but contemplating just how fast a lightweight car like the Mk1 Rabbit would be boggles the mind.

1997 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S

The Porsche 993 Carrera 4S is just one of those cars that stops me in my tracks every time I see one. Sure, people tend to ogle over the 993 as it was the final air-cooled 911, but the C4S is just one of those cars that, 17 years on, is just about as close to timeless as you can get. The wide fenders and subtle ground effects just make for such a visually appealing sports car while the proportions are still close to the original vehicle that debuted all the way back in the 1960s. This C4S for sale is located in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. It has had three owners, with the current owner deciding to sell due to light usage.

1993 Mercedes-Benz 500SEC

Fewer cars summed up the optimism and robust market of the mid to late 1990s than then Mercedes-Benz W140 S class. While it was released on the tail end of an economic downturn and derided for its decadence, this was an impressive car, not only because of its size. Mercedes packed a ton of features and the latest technology into this new S class that, as usual, had the competition scrambling to keep up. A two door SEC model was on offer, both in 5.0 liter V8 and 6.0 liter V12 format. This 1993 500SEC has traveled only 42,000 miles and offers someone the crack at executive comforts at a subcompact price.
