1994 Saab 9000 Aero

$_57 (1)

We’ve been known to feature the errant Swedish ride here at GCFSB, especially when it comes to the faster hardware. News came down at the beginning of the month that Saab was restarting production two years after declaring bankruptcy. While the new cars will be a continuation of the 9-3 model, now is a good time to reflect back on models past.

The 1990s were an interesting time for Saab, as General Motors took a 50% controlling interest in the company and a new 900 arrived in 1994, based on Opel Vectra underpinnings. The 9000 model, launched in 1984, shared its platform with the Alfa Romeo 164, Lancia Thema and Fiat Croma. The model carried on through 1997, with the Aero model featured here being released in 1993. This was the most powerful Saab to date, with a 2.3 liter, turbocharged inline-4 producing 225 horsepower. This Aero for sale in Pennsylvania is one of the rare Cirrus White examples. Just over 100 left the factory between 1993 and 1997.

Sport Coupes for the People: 1987 Volkswagen Scirocco 16V & 1992 Volkswagen Corrado SLC

Let’s face it: there’s a gap in the US lineup at Volkswagen. I’m looking at you, Scirocco. On a visit to Lisbon, Portugal earlier this year, I admired the white example I saw sitting in the showroom floor in a dealer in the middle of the city. Nevermind the neat little Up sitting right next to it. True, the Scirocco is not much more than a Golf with a fancy body, but some people want that extra style. Let’s look at the last two coupes that Volkswagen offered stateside, a late model Scirocco 16V and a Corrado SLC VR6.

1989 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet Silver Anniversary Edition

$_57 (1)

At the end of a car’s lifecycle or when it passes a milestone of production, typically a manufacturer will offer a special edition model to commemorate the event. In the case of the Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera, these two events coincided in 1989, as the sun was setting on the 3.2 for the 964 model and 1989 marked 25 years of the 911. Offered in two colors, Silver Metallic or Satin Black, this was a limited run model that included Silk Gray supple leather seats, a center console covered in leather that had an outside temperature gauge and CD holders, front and rear spoilers, a shorter throw shifter and color keyed wheels. This Cabriolet version for sale in California has just over $50,000 miles and offers a rare opportunity at what some consider the ultimate mashup between the classic and modern 911.

1980 Volkswagen Rabbit Diesel Survivor

$_57 (1)

It seems that a lot of the cars we know and love from the 1980s have been taking flight when it comes to values. Whether it’s the ubiquitous E30 M3 or the 4000S Quattro that sold for over $12,000 yesterday, it’s apparent that the this era has now evolved into classic territory for us thirtysomething folks who remember these machines fondly from our youth. This 1980 Volkswagen Rabbit Diesel for sale in Maryland might not have the pace and cache of the Mk1 Rabbit GTI, but it’s an honest to goodness survivor sure to please the Volkswagen enthusiast.
