I’m a fan of basic modes of transport. Oftentimes the lower run models in a lineup get overlooked, only for their good qualities to be ignored. Such is the case with this Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3. An early W201, this car was far from basic, but could be considered such as compared to the rest of the Mercedes lineup at the time. With it’s four-cylinder engine, you won’t be getting anywhere fast, but then again, it’s not as slow as some of the diesels of that era, either. This Nautical Blue 190E 2.3 is approaching just 50,000 miles and looks quite stately in a pleasing hue of Nautical Blue over Gray MB Tex.

1967 Mercedes-Benz 230S Universal

The term “cool” is overused a lot in the English vernacular, but if one car I’ve ever discussed on GCFSB could be described as such, it’s this rare Mercedes-Benz 230S estate. Fully restored, in a very fetching color combination, replete with a 4-speed manual gearbox on the column, it doesn’t get much better than this for the five-door enthusiast. These estates were produced by IMA in Belgium, who were producing knock down kits of Mercedes sedans, as well. I have a personal connection to the W111 chassis 230S, as my father used to own a 230S sedan with a 4-speed manual on the floor years ago. Could this 230S be the ultimate chariot in which to carry the family to the country club?

1992 Mercedes-Benz 400E

1992 Mercedes-Benz 400E

While it’s a model that’s rather forgotten to this day, the 400E was the car that brought the V8 engine into the mid-sized E-class sedan and one with which I have a personal relationship. My father bought a 1992 400E when I was in college and ran it for a while until the new MINIs appeared in early 2002 and he decided to bring back a little nostalgia in his life from his autocross years in the late 1960s and early 1970s. While I favored the 190E 2.6 my father previously drove, there were things to enjoy about the 400E, mainly the lusty eight-cylinder lump under the hood. This 400E for sale in California is looking rather crisp for a car with over 150,000 miles and offers a lot of brawn for the buck.

There is no doubt that modern day Porsches are impressive machines, with power and performance almost second to none. But when I scan the current lineup, there’s something missing. I’d never deny these are great machines, but I almost feel like there’s a bit of a carefree nature that was apparent in Porsches from the past. Case in point, this 1997 911 Carrera 2 Cabriolet for sale from our friends at Automobili Limited right outside of Philadelphia. The owner of the dealership, Tony Kasser, was kind enough to invite me for a visit this summer and it was an impressive collection of enthusiast machines, mostly of German origin. This 911 Cabriolet is another in a long line of classic Porsches in their collection. In Guards Red over Cashmere leather with a 6-speed manual gearbox, this is a great way to enjoy one of the last of the air-cooled 911s.

1981 Mercedes-Benz 280E

1981 Mercedes-Benz 280E

Yesterday, we featured a 1987 Mercedes-Benz 300TD, it’s diesel engine being a rarity for US market W124 estates. Today, we have this 1981 Mercedes-Benz 280E, with it’s petrol six-cylinder engine equally as rare for US market W123s. Whether it’s a diesel or petrol lump under the hood, less than 85,000 miles is not much for these cars and the condition certainly appears in line with the mileage. If you’ve always desired a little more speed in your W123, this would be one to scope out.
