There was a lot of changes in store for BMW in the late 1980s. In 1987, a larger, more powerful 7 series debuted with the option of a brand new V12 engine, the 3 series convertible would capture the hearts and minds of yuppies across the US and a new 5 series would debut in 1988. However, the E28 wasn’t done for that easily and would continue being sold through the end of the model year. This 520i for sale in Florida is a model we never saw in the US market, with a 2.0 liter inline-6 that found it’s way under the hood of a number other BMWs in other markets. While some pine for the crash bumper look of the 1980s BMWs, I tend to prefer the slimmer Euro bumpers of this particular car, lending a bit of a cleaner look.

1985 Mercedes-Benz 300D with 22k miles

After setting eyes on this low mileage 1985 Mercedes-Benz 300D for sale in New Jersey, I thought to myself “this car embodies everything I used to love about Mercedes.” If you asked me right now to sound off the current lineup, I’d struggle to name every model and trim variation, such is the expanse of the product portfolio and my general indifference towards SUVs from any manufacturer. The W123’s life came to a close when there was a fairly simple lineup, although one which expanded with the introduction of the W201 190 class. Few thought the W123, with its larger than life reputation, could be successfully superseded, but the W124 E-class did an admirable job of building an image all its own. Still, however, the W123 is revered amongst the Mercedes faithful with many original and restored examples roaming the streets today. If you’re looking for the best of the best, though, this example pretty much takes the cake.

Tuner Tuesday: 1968 Volkswagen Beetle

For all the Alpinas, AMGs and Andials we might feature, there is one German cars that has remained a favorite of automotive customizers for years: the original Volkswagen Beetle. There’s an infinite amount of ways you can go with Beetle modifications, from dune buggy to dragsters. One popular modification is the Cal Look, consisting of a lowered suspension, aftermarket wheels and sometimes removal of the bumpers. This freshly restored 1968 Beetle for sale in Arizona has shades of that style, but retains the original bumpers. Wearing a bold shade, it looks great sitting on Empi style wheels.

1991 Mercedes-Benz 300SL

1991 Mercedes-Benz 300SL

For me, the R129 Mercedes-Benz 300SL came one year too late. The US market was never privy to its predecessor, the R107 300SL, which was available with both automatic and manual gearboxes. This was always a favorite R107 variant of mine, its smooth 3.0 liter inline six seemingly more suited to this car’s size than a big V8. And of course, the available 5-speed manual was a huge attraction for me. Mercedes decided to take a little bit different direction for the 1990s and made available the six cylinder SL to North American customers, even with a manual gearbox option for a few years. This 300SL for sale in Illinois is a Canadian market SL with the 5-speed automatic gearbox in one of my favorite SL colors, Cabernet Red.

1994 Porsche 928GTS

1994 Porsche 928GTS

Featured here is a decent example of the highly desirable 5-speed Porsche 928 GTS. According to the 928 Registry, this particular car is the 114th out of 139 GTS’s imported in 1994, and one of only 44 fitted with a 5-speed manual transmission. Furthermore, it is one of 62 GTS’s spec’d with a schwartz exterior, 20 of which were five-speeds.

In addition to sporting the desirable black/black color combo, this GTS was fitted with around $12,000 of extra options. This is unusual for a later model GTS, as most were ordered as dealer inventory with few options (most GTS’s with many optional extras were 1993s). Some of the options I particularly like are the rootwood handbrake and shift lever (I know that many don’t like wood in a Porsche, but I do), the car phone, the extremely rare CD/cassette holder in the door, and the deletion of the exterior rubstrips. These extras, along with a few others brought the original sticker price to over $95,000.
