Tuner Tuesday: 1991 Alpina RLE

$_4 (1)

The first of the BMW Z1s to roll off the production line are now eligible for legal importation to the US, given they’ve crossed the 25 year old mark. None of the 8,000 produced over three years made their way stateside, but these roadsters with their funky downward retracting doors do have a cult following. Famed BMW tuner Alpina tried their hand at modifying the Z1, the result being the vehicle you see here: the RLE, or Roadster Limited Edition. Only 66 of these special Z1s were ever made, half going to Japan and half allocated for Europe.

Amongst the modifications was an inline-6 enlarged to 2.7 liters that bumped power to around 200 bhp, shorter front springs and trademark 17″ Alpina wheels. Along with the original 66 produced, a handful were also converted to Alpina spec from original Z1s. This RLE for sale at 4Star Classics is one of the original 66 and produced. It’s hard to imagine a Z1 being thought of as common, but this RLE takes exclusivity to another level.

1993 Mercedes-Benz 300TE

$_4 (1)

We’re in the midst of planning another Wagon Week here at GCFSB, but until then, let’s take a look at one of our favorite 5-doors, the Mercedes-Benz W124 estate. Long before SUVs like the ML, GL and GLK roamed the earth, Mercedes’ mainstream utility vehicle was their mid-sized estate vehicle. While a few coach builders produced estate variants after World War II, Mercedes’ first in-house effort was the W123 estate of the late 1970s. This car has become the darling of the biodiesel set, attracting folks looking for a bit of panache with their free motoring. The W124 estate did an excellent job of picking up where the W123 left off, combining the classic hallmarks of Mercedes-Benz style with a good balance of luxury, utility and durability that kept customers coming back to the showrooms. This W124 estate for sale in Florida has escaped the ravages of hard duty, showing just under 80,000 miles on the odometer.

1981 BMW 320is

$_4 (1)

For years, the BMW E21 3 series sort of languished by the wayside. If there ever was an annals of unloved BMWs (admittedly a short list) you could have included this very car. However, with the popularity of this car’s replacement, the E30 3 series, taking off, those wanting to go their own way might be intrigued by the first 3 series. It’s not the fastest or most glamourous of Bimmers, but it represents a period of transition for the marque that would set up the company to go from strength to strength in the years to come. This mint 320is for sale in Spokane, Washington has just over 40,000 miles on the clock. Silver over black isn’t the most exciting of colors but it does little to date the look of this early 3er.

1993 Porsche 928GTS – REVISIT

The 1993 Porsche 928GTS we featured last September has cropped up for sale once again, the asking price unchanged. Of all the 928s, the market for the GTS is strong, especially when equipped with the manual gearbox. Will this minter of a V8 Porsche find a home this time around?

2009 Mercedes-Benz SLR Stirling Moss

$_4 (1)

Until recently, Mercedes-Benz could be considered a conservative automotive company. Occasionally they would drop a bombshell, releasing a peculiar beast such as the 300SEL 6.3 or Porsche influenced 500E/E500. The tie up with McLaren to produce the SLR didn’t seem too out of the ordinary, given the collaboration of the two concerns in Formula 1 racing. The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren was a bit of a 300SL revival, with its doors that swung vertically forward, two-seat layout and grilles on both front fenders. Mercedes had done supercars like this before, but no one could anticipate the special edition that was coming. The SLR Stirling Moss.

Named after the famed British racing driver and built to commemorate Mercedes’ participation in the famed Mille Miglia race, the SLR Stirling Moss was a purpose built, open-roofed hooligan. This car was a true speedster with no windscreen or roof, and shared little externally with the SLR Coupe and Roadster. A split cockpit and roll hoops completed the look, with a 640 horsepower, supercharged V8 provided the motivation. Available only to former SLR owners, only 75 examples would be built. For those wanting a rare and rather current collectable, you can find this Mercedes on offer in Frankfurt, Germany.
