2006 MINI Cooper S John Cooper Works GP

$_57 (1)

It’s hard to believe it’s almost been a full decade since the first generation of the reborn MINI Cooper has passed. Four years ago I made the fateful choice to sell my 2007 Mercedes-Benz C230 Sport for a low mileage 2006 Cooper S. I haven’t looked back. It’s been a fantastic ownership experience and a car that suits my needs quite well. I choose a 2006 Cooper S because it was the final year for the Brasilian sourced Tritec supercharged engine. The first time I got behind the wheel of an R53 Cooper S I was hooked. The engine was punchy, had torque in every gear and, oh, that whine from the blower under the bonnet. In an age where a lot of newer cars seem to just blend together, this little car had serious character.

For the R53’s final year, MINI would introduce a special run of 2000 Cooper S models, with the John Cooper Works package labeled the “GP.” This was a very focused, track ready beast built in Italy by Bertone, sans rear seat with some other weight savings measures and a higher output motor. The sole color choice was Thunder Blue with red door mirror caps, carbon fiber rear wing and unique four-spoke alloys. This Cooper S JCW GP for sale in Miami has done just over 40,000 miles and is ready to tackle any curve you could throw at it.

1987 Volkswagen Scirocco 16V

One of my favorite cars from the 1980s that has seems relegated to obscurity these days – at least in the US – is the Volkswagen Scirocco. This isn’t too surprising, as it has been 27 years since the last one left showrooms. Like the Karmann Ghia which preceded it, its underpinnings came from rather humble origins but strove to attract the VW shopper who wanted something perhaps a little bit more sporty and unique. Late in its life, the Scirocco got a shot in the arm by way of the 1.8 liter 16 valve engine and some styling tweaks such as monochrome bumpers and fancier alloys. This 1987 Scirocco 16V for sale in California isn’t original, but has benefitted from a thorough refresh to ensure it is on the road for a good number of years to come.

1986 Porsche 911 Cabriolet

It’s rather amazing that the Porsche 911 went almost a full 20 years without a full on convertible option, relying on the Targa variant to address the wants and desires of those seeking al fresco motoring. In 1983, the 911SC Cabriolet debuted, quickly replaced in 1984 with the introduction of the Carrera 3.2 range. While most hardcore enthusiasts prefer the rigidity of the coupe variant, there is something about the Cabriolet that conjures up images of carefree jaunts by the seaside, enjoying the raspy tune from the flat-6 mill swung aft of the rear axle line. This 1986 911 Cabriolet is painted in an uncommon shade of Perlmuttweiss Mica over black leather with white piping.

Feature Listing – 1995 BMW 540i M-Sport

The 1990s were a watershed decade for BMW. So many great cars emerged from Munich during this period, among them the last of the E30 M3s, the brutish V12 powered 850CSi and, towards the end of the decade, the beautifully unique M Coupe. Of course, there are so many others models that passed us by during this decade. One of which was the car we see here for sale in Minnesota, the E34 540i M-Sport. The E34 M5 would bow out of the US market in 1993, leaving a hole in the lineup for a fast 5. Enter the 540i M-Sport, which was similar in spec to the European market M5, but with a 4.0 liter V8 under the hood mated to either a 6-speed manual as we see here, or a 5-speed automatic. Only 200 of these special E34s would be sold, leaving a car like this, with under 50,000 miles in desirable Alpine White over black leather, a rare treat indeed.

1998 Porsche 911 Carrera S

$_57 (1)

There’s something about a widebody 911 that gets my heart racing. The 993 Carrera S and 4S captured this look perfectly, with it’s smoother styling that would usher in the final chapter of the air-cooled 911. The Carrera S and 4S was an attempt, as in previous generations, to capture a bit of the aggression of the 911 Turbo without the cost or complexity. Other than the rear wing and twin-turbocharged engine, the S models were quite similar to the Turbo, sharing the wider rear haunches that would ultimately increase aerodynamic drag. This Carrera 2S for sale in Ohio has been tuned up a bit, looking quite mean in black sitting on replica Fuchs alloys.
