One of the most popular automotive forbidden fruits for US car enthusiasts is the BMW E30 3 series Touring. Now over 25 years old and eligible for importation, it seems that a steady stream of these small estate cars are arriving on these shores. For E30 fans who may have given up their beloved rides years ago with the pressures of family and a changing lifestyle, this car solves many of those space needs. There was even a four-wheel drive variant available for those who may need added traction, but we have yet to come across one in the US. Imported from England last year, this right-hand drive 1988 325i Touring for sale in Florida is an original car with some tasteful modifications.

1983 Mercedes-Benz 309D Van

Another day, another musing regarding a potential future RV conversion for Nate. This one brings it a little closer to home, however. I’m a rowing coach, and a few years ago my former coach eschewed the Ford Excursions used as team vans and bought diesel Mercedes-Benz Sprinters. With the ability for 6’5″ dudes to stand up, serious A/C for hot races, and diesel efficiency, they are a great choice. It just so happens the brand of boats we race are German and come exclusively in a pale yellow – see where I’m going with this? I want to buy this van and turn it into my Race Headquarters, tastefully logo’d up and ready to analyze data, rewatch footage, and catch a nap. My coworker said she’d buy my Toyota truck for whatever I paid for this proto-Sprinter, and right now that’s looking like a great deal on both ends.

1997 Porsche 911 Turbo

These final-year air-cooled turbos are where it’s at in performance, looks, and modern-day classic status. I love the understated nature of my neighbor’s all-black 993 Turbo, but his chrome turbo twists aren’t quite as attractive as these flat ones. The color and wheels will probably not be the deciding factor in the price here – with just over 31k miles, this is an epic example of a car that grows in desirability (and price) every year.

1986 Mercedes-Benz 560SL

I remember the days when you could buy a vintage Mercedes-Benz 190SL for pennies on the dollar. Sure, they weren’t the fastest thing from Stuttgart, but one quick glance and you might mistake one for its larger sibling, the 300SL. But between the original Gullwing and it’s open roofed stable mate and the Pagoda SL that followed, the 190SL was a bit forgotten. Today, however, it’s almost impossible to get into a 190SL on a budget, with the best examples bringing healthy six figure sums at auction. Fast forward a few more years though, and its descendant, the 560SL, can still be a relatively affordable proposition. This white on blue R107 for sale in Florida has just the right look to blend right in at the local yacht club.

1981 Volkswagen Rabbit Pickup Diesel

For a country that loves its trucks, it’s curious we have so few options when it comes to new compact trucks. The Japanese have been in the game for quite some time, but even their offerings have grown to the point of not quite compact of late. There have been rumblings that Ford is going to get back in the game with an updated Ranger and GM is about to unleash a new Chevrolet Colorado for those who many find their full-size offerings a bit too much. Beyond compact pickups, there was another option years ago, the car-based truck.

Still available in some markets from certain manufacturers, these type of trucks were mainly used for light hauling and delivery duties. Volkswagen decided it would try its hat at its own version of the El Camino formula by offering US customers the Mk1 Rabbit Pickup years ago, known as the Caddy elsewhere. Offered for a few years alongside Rabbits and GTIs, these small trucks have a dedicated following, with many folks tuning them or adding GTI trim. This diesel version for sale in Oregon is in splendid, original condition, having been owned by one family its whole life.
