1989 Mercedes-Benz 560SEL

The nice thing about the W126 platform S-class is that you can still find a car suit to suit every budget. A quick look on local Craigslist throws up several examples in various states of repair for a few grand. And some of them look pretty clean. But of course, as the old adage goes, there’s nothing as expensive as a cheap Mercedes. And cars at that end of the market, particularly the V8s, are likely to need some costly repairs at some point or another, just as a matter of course. But what if you were in the enviable position of having an unlimited budget and a desire for a W126 in almost brand-new, showroom condition? What kind of money would you have to spend, and what would it get you? Perhaps this mint condition, range-topping 560SEL with an incredibly low 39k miles on the odometer is the answer.

1989 BMW 325iX Touring

It’s been a balmy couple of days in DC, with temperatures shooting up to around 60 degrees. One could be forgiven for wondering where the winter went. It will soon be here, I’m sure. And with it the snow and ice, the city-wide shutdown, and the terrible drivers causing pile-ups around the beltway. What would be the ideal winter warrior for times like these? The E30 325iX quickly comes to mind. A brief search on Craigslist throws up a number of tidy options (as well as the usual plethora of over-priced rust buckets). But one in particular stands out, a bit of a unicorn. AWD? Check. Manual? Check? Wagon? Check! Eye-watering price? Double check!

1989 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Coupe

Our search constantly has us on the lookout for rare models, rare colors, and rare combinations of both. In the world of 911s that usually means something very expensive.

There is another type of search.

A search for the more frequently seen models, but still ones that seem to stand above the rest of the crowd. Since 911s are expensive full stop they’re not cheap, but for those shopping for one in the first place we’re at least delving into more reasonable territory. Sometimes we find subtle combinations of these factors, typically less common color combinations on otherwise common models with higher mileage that helps keeps prices down. That seems to be the case here. This Silver Metallic 1989 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Coupe fits the bill of a standard 911 that appears in nice shape given its age and mileage. However, step into the interior and we find Burgundy leather carpets and seating that we do not see often on the 964. We frequently come across a Burgundy interior in the 3.2 Carrera and perhaps it is this model year’s close proximity and overlap with those outgoing Carreras that made it possible for Burgundy to find its way into this early Carrera 4.

1989 Porsche 930 Coupe

I’ve been on a little run of 911 Turbos lately with most of those coming from the 930 and I always enjoy seeing such well cared for examples come our way. The 930 brings with it a clear ’80s vibe and as a child of that time it’s always nice to return to the poster cars of my youth. These were one of the first cars I’d see on the street and say, “What is that?” Of course, my response today would be no different given how rare it is to come across one on the street. Here we’re going to look at one from the final year of their production prior to the introduction of a new Turbo as part of the 964: a Guards Red 1989 Porsche 930 Coupe, located in Charlotte, with just under 56K miles on it.
