As enthusiasts cars go, the words “TDi” and “Passat” don’t generally generate a tremendous amount of enthusiasm. Of course, that belies the entire subculture of Volkswagen enthusiasts that are diesel obsessed; but even amongst them the Passat TDi is rarely the first car they’d choose. Perhaps the exception to that is the wagon version of the B4, which offered smart looks and unbelievable fuel mileage. However, we looked at one on our Facebook fanpage, and people baulked as the price approached $15,000 on a high mile, 20 year old Passat diesel. So what’s here today then? Well, if you need a smart commuter, want to get 50 miles a gallon with a bit of sleeper style, the Passat sedan offers arguably better build quality than the Mk.2 and Mk.3 Jetta diesels did and can be had for a more reasonable budget. Today, there are two nearly identical mileage B4 TDis available on Ebay – let’s start with the older one:

Now and then we come across cars that seem destined to set the market for the value of a particular car and we may be looking at just that scenario with the car featured here. This one-owner Midnight Blue 1996 Porsche 911 Turbo, located in Florida, with Grey/Midnight Blue leather interior has a mere 3,800 miles on the clock. The 993 in general has been a beloved car since introduction and that rings even more true for the 993 Turbo. Twin-turbocharged, 6-speed manual, perfect lines, the first 911 Turbo to utilize Porsche’s all-wheel-drive system and the last of the air-cooled Turbos, these had it all. To top it off, the value of these cars has been on an ever-increasing ascension that hardly seems like it will slow down anytime soon.

Comments closedWhile the 850Ci 6-speed manual we featured last week was certainly an attractive grand tourer, the V12 running costs may put some prospective enthusiasts off. For those, we have this car, the 840Ci. With four less cylinders a little bit of the servicing complication away without finding yourself down on too much power. This second to last year E31 coupe for sale in California has covered under 70,000 miles. If you desire a BMW coupe from the 1990s but want to stand out from the crowd, these grand tourers are a good way to go about it.

1 CommentThese final-year air-cooled turbos are where it’s at in performance, looks, and modern-day classic status. I love the understated nature of my neighbor’s all-black 993 Turbo, but his chrome turbo twists aren’t quite as attractive as these flat ones. The color and wheels will probably not be the deciding factor in the price here – with just over 31k miles, this is an epic example of a car that grows in desirability (and price) every year.

Comments closedThere’s always some debate when an E36 BMW M3 equipped with an automatic gearbox appears on GCFSB. Seems like an out of place option, but I’ve become more accepting of it as I age. A sign that I’m going soft? Perhaps. A bit further north of BMWs home turf, Mercedes-Benz was busy with AMG in the mid-1990s creating their first official in-house collaboration after the company absorbed the tuning firm a few years earlier. Available only with a 4-speed automatic gearbox, the C36 AMG was not what you would call a direct successor to the famous Cosworth tuned 190Es, but it took that prior concept in a more luxury oriented direction per the 500E/E500 formula. This C36 for sale in Arizona has a reasonable 77,000 miles on the clock and is a good way to enjoy your speed discreetly.
