1970 Porsche 911S

Sports cars are largely defined by the hot versions that have been produced. Whether that is fair or not it remains the case and was especially true of cars from the 1960s. For the 911 the first hot version, and the model that quickly moved the car into the ranks of the elite sports cars of its day, was the 911S released in 1967. As both a lighter and more powerful version of the 911 the S was sure to be a hit even if its greater power exacerbated the car’s already skittish and tail-happy nature. Porsche addressed that issue in 1969 by lengthening the wheelbase across the 911 range and then for 1970 displacement was increased from 2.0 liters to 2.2 liters, bringing horsepower of the S up to 180 along with an appreciable raise in torque. As this sort of elite sports car the S would only truly exist for another couple of years before being phased out entirely (at least until the 993), making these early examples some of the most highly prized of any 911 on the market. 1969 Porsche 911S Soft-window Targa

We’ve seen this story before: we come across an already rare Porsche model, this time a 911S, which has its rarity compounded by other factors and we end up with a super rare model. But there’s always a minor hiccup. In the case here, added to the rarity of the S is that this is a long-wheel-base soft-window targa. However, it has a non-original engine that while correct for the model was not the engine particular to this car. Exactly how many of these cars exist appears to be unknown, though the R&T article the seller directs us to states that there were a total of 9 of this specific model built in 1969. Even if that number is incorrect, the total is still going to be very low. A non-numbers matching example in this condition can still do very well for collectors, but there is always going to be that sticking point about originality. For the car itself: we have here an Irish Green 1969 Porsche 911S Soft-window Targa, located in California, with 153,000 miles on it.

1974 Porsche 911S

Porsche certainly has a history of doing interesting, and vibrant, shades of green on their cars. They’ve also made available many of the darker and metallic green colors we typically see on the market, but it’s the mint greens, viper greens, and, like the car we see here, lime greens that really stand out and draw loads of attention. This isn’t a completely original 911S, but Lime Green is the original color and the non-original aesthetic alterations, like the addition of the ducktail spoiler, tend to enhance the overall look of this car rather than detract from it. The mid-year 911s are not always the most popular, but when they can be had in one of the more interesting colors Porsche made available, then they become quite a bit more of a talking point. Here we have a Lime Green 1973 Porsche 911S Coupe, located in California, with 128,951 miles on it.

1977 Porsche 911S

It feels like lately we’ve come across 911s from this vintage quite a bit more frequently. I’m not sure if this is a case of sellers hoping to take advantage of the “rising tide raises all boats” phenomenon or if we’re just taking notice of these cars more frequently. Either way, here we have another example from the era spanning 1974-1977, this time a dark brown (perhaps Chocolate Brown?) 1977 Porsche 911S, located in Charlottesville, VA, with Cork interior and 93,043 miles on it. This particular example has some modifications to the engine and the interior of which any interested buyer will need to take account. With that said, I find the interior modifications to be particularly well done, providing both a functional and also attractive cockpit. While modified cars can be tough, if the other modifications have been executed with equal care as the interior, then that should provide some comfort about the performance of the car.

1967 Porsche 911S Soft-window Targa

Last week we featured a 912 Soft-window Targa that sat on the value-end of the scale for these peculiar models, even if that particular example was priced a bit high. Now we are going to move almost entirely to the other end of the spectrum. The Soft-window Targa was not only made for the 912, but also was available on the 911, including the top-of-the-range and highly sought after 911S. In this case we’re just stacking rarity on rarity with a rare color of a rare variant of a rare model. It should come as no surprise then that this car is priced at nearly $200K, 5 times the high price for last week’s 912. But this post isn’t about finding an interesting value, but rather about coming across one of the most interesting 911s made in the late ’60s. Here we have a Gulf Blue 1967 Porsche 911S Soft-window Targa that comes in at just under 125K miles and also sports an interesting classic rally pedigree.
