1979 Porsche 930

Do you like apples? No, this isn’t a Good Will Hunting joke. The color combination on this 1979 Porsche 930 reminds me very much of a green apple. It’s a bit more jolly rancher green than actual green apple green, but still that’s what comes to mind. Is that a good thing? Well, that takes us back to the question at the beginning. It’s definitely unique and I do think I prefer the tan over a black interior, which is probably more common with this sort of exterior color, but I think I’d need to see it in person to really get a good sense of how everything works together. For the 1978 model year Porsche increased the displacement of the 930’s engine from 3.0 liters to 3.3 liters and added an air-to-air intercooler, easily identifiable by the change in profile of the rear spoiler, which gave the 930 a nice bump in power – up 20 hp to 265 hp on US models. Perhaps of most significance here, 1979 was the last year the 930 would be available in the US until it was reintroduced in 1986. That tends to make them in higher demand than some of the later models, though not nearly as much so as the early 3.0 liter models.

1988 Porsche 930 Coupe

So who wants to take a risk? Or if not a risk, then simply put in the work to understand this Porsche 930’s history. As I’ve said previously, when we encounter cars that seem undervalued then we must ask a lot of questions. That is especially so when we are dealing with cars that aren’t exactly flying under the radar and the 930 certainly fits that bill. But with an asking price of $77,950 this Black Pearl Metallic 1988 Porsche 930 Coupe definitely seems like it is on offer for a pretty reasonable price and given the sharp rise in values we’ve seen for these Turbos that price brings with it a host of concerns. But the mileage is very reasonable and it looks in very good shape. Honestly, if it wasn’t for the low price I would have few questions about this car and the color combination (more on that below) isn’t one we see very often on a 911. Perhaps I’m being too cynical and this is just a nice value?

1976 Porsche 930 Turbo Carrera

It isn’t too often that I come across an old Porsche priced at $160K and think the price doesn’t seem too bad. As with any car of that sort the question of “why?” becomes paramount as we try to understand the reason for the seemingly reasonable price and whether the car truly is worth taking on the risk. Here we have a 1976 Porsche 930 Turbo Carrera where we find ourselves in just that quandary. Such is the world we are in with these early air-cooled Turbos. The issues with this one are in one part clear and in one part unclear. The clarity lies in the color: both the exterior and interior colors have been changed. The original colors were Copper Brown Metallic over Black and its current colors are Sahara Beige over Brown. Why the colors were changed is left unsaid and may be unknown as it seems those changes took place with a previous owner, rather than the current long-term owner of the car. It could be as simple as changing to a more desirable palette since brown metallic fell out of favor pretty quickly once we left the ’70s. Still, that’s our first piece of uncertainty. The rest of the uncertainty is more standard as the car recently has come out of long-term storage and that in itself can cause its own set of troubles. Its recent service records will help in that regard, but interested buyers still will want a thorough evaluation to be sure of this 930’s present condition.

1984 Porsche DP935

Typically a car like this one we would reserve for a Tuner Tuesday post. The parameters of this auction don’t really allow for that so this will serve as a bonus Tuner Tuesday (on Friday)! The DP935 takes all of the styling excesses of which we are familiar on the Porsche 930 and turns them up a notch. That is especially the case with an example like this one with the full front end treatment, rather than retaining the standard, and already somewhat wild, 930 Slantnose design. DP Motorsports had partnered with Kremer racing for a number of years providing lightweight bodywork for Kremer’s race cars, which all sort of came to a head with their collaboration on Kremer’s 935 K3. The DP935 is a road-going iteration of that car, though without the cachet that comes with the Kremer name being associated with it. Painted in iconic Gulf Blue and Orange this DP935 brings us about as close as we can get to having a road-going racer modeled off of Porsche’s legendary 935. While these began life as a Porsche 930, and retain the basic shape of those cars, the final product easily distances itself from the 930 in nearly every department, from power to design aesthetic. For those with fond memories of Porsche racing from the ’70s and ’80s a DP935 brings with it the opportunity to own a fantastic piece of that history and one of the ultimate attention-grabbing cars.

1987 Porsche 930 Slantnose Coupe

Porsche’s 935-derived Slantnose option, made available throughout most of the ’80s, remains a polarizing design among 911 enthusiasts. Because it alters the iconic profile of the 911, through the removal of its forward-pointing head lamps, some have always felt it was a detraction rather than enhancement. Yet, because it replaced that shape with the equally iconic front of the 935 racer the Slantnose does lend an added dose of aggression and purpose to what was already a notable design. It pushes the limits of what we consider over-the-top and epitomizes the excesses we saw in ’80s design. I happen to be a big fan of the design – at least on the Coupe. It is audacious, there is no doubt about that, but if there was ever a car to benefit from an audacious design the 930 fits that mold as well as any other. The second-hand market has found them extremely attractive as well as they tend to garner premiums over a similar condition non-Slatnose 930. The example here is a very striking Grand Prix White 1987 Porsche 930 Slantnose Coupe, located in California, with Bordeaux interior and only 24K miles on it.
