Most of the time we’re writing about 1980s E30s coming up for hassle-free importation we’re looking at tourings, as they were never brought here. Today, however, reader Bruce has alerted us to an intriguing E30 convertible from Japan via Canada. It’s still left-hand drive, but is in great condition after 90k miles and comes with the same plaid cloth and leather interior that was in the S38 M3 featured earlier this week. The biggest detraction is the automatic, but if you’re looking for some classy and easy top-down cruising, this would be a nice option.

“They don’t make ‘em like they used to.” How many times do we hear this in passing? Perhaps in this age of instant communication and mass produced goods, it rings more true than ever. For the most part, new cars are more reliable and offer technology one could have only dreamed of a scant ten years ago. For some, new cars have lost a bit of that special feeling that came with design driven by passion rather than committee and accountant. Step into a car today and even the most extravagant models will have some parts from a central supplier or share switchgear with lesser models in the parent company portfolio.
This nicely presented 560SL comes to us from our friends at Sun Valley Auto Club in Idaho and is a stunning example of one of the most iconic Mercedes designs of the last few decades.

1 CommentFor years, the Porsche 944 soldiered on as a sports coupe. It wouldn’t be until 1990 that Porsche decided to test the waters with the 944S2 Cabriolet. Sold in limited numbers, the car would offer buyers a cheaper alternative to an open roofed 911. It’s longevity in the market was short, as Porsche unveiled a 944 replacement for 1992 in the form of the 968. Porsche would yet again offer a drop top variant in the new lineup, however. Let’s look at two very nice examples of these rare convertible Porsches, the first a clean 944S2 Cabriolet for sale in Maryland.

Comments closedBeing an East Coaster, I look upon car enthusiasts in California with envy. Washington, DC isn’t really a car guy kind of town. There’s a lot of fancy new machinery tooling around the block here, but anyone can go out and buy a new car provided they have the resources. The classics, however, seem scarce. As such, it makes me lust after a modern classic like this BMW 318i Cabriolet even more, just to stand out from the herd. There seems to be a never ending supply of clean, rust-free classics on the left coast and this open-roofed Bimmer fits the description.

3 CommentsI remember the days when you could buy a vintage Mercedes-Benz 190SL for pennies on the dollar. Sure, they weren’t the fastest thing from Stuttgart, but one quick glance and you might mistake one for its larger sibling, the 300SL. But between the original Gullwing and it’s open roofed stable mate and the Pagoda SL that followed, the 190SL was a bit forgotten. Today, however, it’s almost impossible to get into a 190SL on a budget, with the best examples bringing healthy six figure sums at auction. Fast forward a few more years though, and its descendant, the 560SL, can still be a relatively affordable proposition. This white on blue R107 for sale in Florida has just the right look to blend right in at the local yacht club.
