The R129 SL still had a bit of life left in it as it entered the late 1990s, but 1997 would be the end for the six-cylinder SL in the US market. Before the SL320 would leave the market, a special edition model would appear to commemorate 40 years of the 300SL, the 40th Anniversary Edition SL. Only 250 SL320 models came with this package, along with 500 of the SL500. The SL500 would feature Crimson Metallic with Chestnut interior and the SL320, like you see here, would be offered in Quartz Blue with a gray interior and royal maple wood trim. This wood trim was an odd choice, as it appeared more like marble than wood. I wasn’t a particular fan of it, but it is certainly different. If you’re looking for an SL that stands out from the crowd, this SL320 for sale in Arizona would be a good selection.

I’m always one intrigued by the road less traveled when it comes to cars. Maybe that’s what prompted me to post that BMW Z3 3.0i Coupe with the automatic transmission earlier in the week. Likewise, this SL320 was a more obscure choice for the SL buyer in the US market in 1995, tallying about half the sales of its V8 sibling, the SL500. The SL320 isn’t a particularly fast machine, but if you are looking for a luxurious cruiser with all of the looks, a car like this 1995 SL320 for sale in Texas would fit the bill.

Comments closedThe 1989 Mercedes-Benz 560SL we featured back in November is back up for auction. It may be deep in the middle of winter in some parts of the nation, but imagine opening your garage up this spring to this treat on four wheels…

2 CommentsThe day has finally arrived. It is now the year where R107s of all kinds are legal for entry into the US, no matter where they came from. For me, this has my eyes set squarely on one very specific model: the 1989 300SL with the 5-speed manual gearbox. The final years of the R107 SL saw but one model in the US market, the 560SL with the 5.6 liter V8 engine. Those that have driven them know these are competent cruisers but aren’t the most all out sporting of machines. For 1986, Mercedes revived a storied name when it dropped the M103 inline-6 under the hood: 300SL. For those not in need of the power (or fuel economy) of a V8, this was an attractive option and was offered with another feature not available on US-bound R107s: a 5-speed manual gearbox.
As a preview to our week of celebrating 1989 vehicles eligible for importation stateside, here is a very low mileage 1989 300SL for sale just south of Cologne, Germany that is equipped with a 5-speed manual. It also has a few other options like heated front seats and the rear Kinder seat that you don’t normally see on the US market 560SL model.

1 CommentSmall car and big engine: the classic formula to putting a huge grin on the motorists face. BMW nailed this formula when they decided to unleash the boffins at BMW M GmbH on the Z3 roadster back in 1998. The M Roadster as it came to be known gave this small convertible a real masculine tone, offering a big horsepower jump and upgraded suspension and brakes to match. If there ever was a car born to do donuts, it is this pint-sized, rear-drive machine.
