2001 BMW M Roadster

I ran into yet another snowstorm driving from Philadelphia to Washington, DC this past Sunday. Anyone else tired of this winter? I thought so. For those in warmer climates, feel fortunate. Not only because you don’t have to deal with the white stuff, but because you can enjoy awesome machinery like this S54 engined M Roadster year round. For those not familiar, BMW switched to the more powerful inline-6 in 2001, giving this little two-seater a 75 horsepower shot in the arm, bringing it closer to the European variant that first came equipped with the S50 engine, instead of the lower horsepower S52 version that we got stateside. These S54 engined E36/8 coupes and roadsters are quite rare, making this one for sale in Maryland in an uncommon hue of Laguna Seca Blue even more attractive.

2002 BMW Z3 3.0i Coupe

The BMW M Coupe has become the darling of the BMW modern classic set. This was a car designed with one purpose in mind: speed. Enthusiasts are all over these cars and prices have shot up accordingly. But for those who might want to spend a little less and could use something a bit more tame, there’s an option for you: the Z3 3.0i coupe. This was a fairly obscure offering in the US lineup, since this car wasn’t designed for outright speed but had the same two seat, hardtop layout as the mental M Coupe. This Z3 3.0i Coupe for sale in Portland, Oregon has under 80,000 miles on the clock and is equipped with the automatic gearbox.

1999 BMW M Coupe

Colors are a fixation with me when I go to pick out a new ride. Oftentimes, the louder the better. In some cases, subtle hues will suit me just fine. When it comes to BMWs, it’s hard to beat Alpinweiss (Alpine White), but runner up to that in terms of desirability, at least for me, is Estorilblau (Estoril Blue). This color takes its name from the coast of Portugal that lies a stones throw from Lisbon, where the Tagus river meets the Atlantic and which the nearby racing circuit takes its name. I was fortunate enough to spend time on the beaches there for part of my Springtime holiday. As I peered out to the ocean, I could see the richness of the color in the water that has graced many a vehicle from Munich. One M car that is particularly suited to this color is the M Coupe, such as this example for sale in Arizona that was brought to our attention by our reader Ry.

This extremely rare and very fun to drive BMW M Coupe is truly the ultimate driving machine. This beauty was only used as a weekend car by both the previous owner and the current owner. Lovingly maintained with all service records available. Excellent condition with only 2 minor flaws, the scratch above the right rear wheel well and the small piece of faded leather on the drivers seat from the driver sliding in and out of the vehicle. Upgraded to aftermarket Dinon suspesion to enhance the amazing handling ability this car already has. Kelley Blue Book on this car is about $22,000. We have a baby on the way in December and need a car that seats more than 2! Sad to see it go.

This M Coupe has the earlier S52 motor with 240 horsepower. Nearing 100,000 miles, this is certainly a more accessible way into this purposeful sports car, lest you want to pay around $30,000 for a later, low mileage example with the more powerful S54 lump under the hood. Some may prefer the stock wheels, but I think these aftermarket units lend an air of individuality to the package and give it more of an aggressive stance. Like the E30 M3 and certain 911s, this is one of those cars that is doubtful to lose any value in the near future, as collectors have recognized just how good they really are.

Tuner Tuesday: BMW Dinan ISR3

Steve Dinan is a wizard at building monster BMWs, and as such managed to make it into the inner-circle as a dealer-approved modifier of BMWs. This extends not only to the base models but also to the already specialized and quick M models. No one who has driven a M Roadster will accuse it of being a slow car, but Dinan took the S52 motor to another level by adding a supercharger and a host of engine and exhaust upgrades to match. But it didn’t just end there; Dinan revised the suspension as well to better suit the increased power and offer more adjustability to the owners of these specialized cars. One aspect that I think is particularly nice about Dinan’s creations is that they often retain the mostly-stock look that makes sleeper performance cars so special. Plop that performance into a M Roadster and you have a ton of top-down fun:

Each Dinan ISR3 conversion began with a new 2000 BMW M Roadster, which was in-turn superbly modified by Dinan in the following ways:

Engine: intercooled supercharged DOHC 24-valve 6-in-line straight six; aluminum block and head, Dinan/Siemens engine-control system with port fuel injection; Vortech helical-cut-gear-driven supercharger for quiet reliability; 10 pounds boost into 10.5:1 compression; 50-state emissions legal. Two different sized compressor bypass valves, one before and one after the intercooler to eliminate low-speed stumble and surging typical
with “high boost” aftermarket supercharger systems. Thermostatically controlled engine oil cooler, enhanced fuel delivery system with larger high-flow fuel injectors. Air filter located outside engine compartment to insure exposure to cool, dense air. Integrated bumper ducting provides ram air effect as road speed increases.

Displacement: 192 cu in, 3152cc
Power (SAE net): 396 bhp @ 6500 rpm
Torque (SAE net): 326 lb-ft @ 5500 rpm

High Flow Throttle Body: Internal diameter of throttle body has been increased for improved airflow. Throttle response is also faster as a result of the modified shape.

High-Flow Air Flow Meter: A larger-diameter air-flow meter is included in order to improve Intake airflow efficiency. The design incorporates a unique “labyrinth” for improved air-flow-meter-voltage stability as well as shielding it from cylinder pulses for a smooth idle and improved peak horsepower.

High Flow Intake Manifold: Polished and ported with larger-diameter intake runners for maximum intake efficiency and resulting power gains.

Engine Management System: The Siemens engine-management system has been programmed for maximum power gains, drive ability, and emissions compliance. System maintains all “On Board Diagnostic”

(OBD II) functions and ignition timing and air/fuel mixtures are optimal throughout the engine’s operating range. VANOS (variable cam timing system) has been reprogrammed for maximum power gains throughout the engine’s operating range.

Free Flow Exhaust: Stainless steel, free-flow mufflers insure that backpressure is kept to a minimum, without creating an unacceptable exhaust note.

Clutch: Stock “dual mass” flywheel and clutch assembly replaced with Dinan Stage 2 Clutch Assembly. Lightweight aluminum flywheel reduces clutch weight by nearly 15 Ibs. or 39%. Clutch clamp pressure increased by 20%.

Transmission: 5-speed manual

3.38:1 Limited-Slip Differential: Final-drive gearing has been lowered from the stock 3.23:1 ratio to compensate for the increased outer diameter of 285/40-17 tires in the rear.

Performance Springs: Increased spring rates and a modestly lower ride height provide greater control and traction in turns.

Moni/Dinan Externally Adjustable Struts and Shocks: Matched with Dinan springs for maximum control. Features custom digressive compression valving for more low-speed shock shaft velocity control, providing greater restriction of camber and toe-angle changes. Front struts are externally adjustable for personalized control of ride quality and handling characteristics

Anti-roll Bars: 22mm front and rear adjustable anti roll bars.

Front Camber Plates: Relocate strut pick-up points for two degrees negative camber in the front, greatly improving turn-in.

Camber Adjustable Rear Subframe: Provides adjustment of camber angles at the rear of the car.

Front Strut Tower Brace: Reduces flex at the shock towers for sharper handling.

Wheels and Tires:

Front: 1 7×8.5″ Dinan Three-piece modular wheels, 255/40-17 Michelin ZR Pilot Sport tires.

Rear: 1 7×9.5″ Dinan Three-piece modular wheels, 285/40-17 Michelin ZR Pilot Sport tires.

Brakes: Brake pads replaced with carbon/metallic pads.
Wheelbase: 96.8 in Length: 158.5 in Curb weight: 3103 lbs.

C/D TEST RESULTS (From Car & Driver article – link below):

Zero to 60 mph: 4.7 sec
Zero to 100 mph: 12.0 sec

There aren’t many of these little rockets floating around – the original article from 2001 claims that only 50 would be built. With 400 hp on tap, they’re a potent package, too. Of course, that potency cost, and cost dearly; new out the door, these Z M Roadsters boasted price tags in excess of $80,000 if you ticked all the right boxes. Sound like a lot? It was, because shortly after the launch you could get into a 315 hp S54-motored Z M for around $45,000. The question then becomes one of exclusivity; do you want what no one else has? Perhaps, and if that’s the case then this car is a good candidate for you.

Of course, it sure would be nice if the seller provided better pictures and some more information, specifically on the claim that the car is only one of 6 (though, I’m guessing perhaps in that color?). Though it has low miles, no mechanical history is provided of the car. Then there’s the asking price – $50,000, which by my maths will buy you no less than three normal M Roadsters with change left over to spare. Much like last week’s Ruf 3400 I think the asking price is far too high even considering the increase in performance. While I have no doubt the car is quick and rare, I just could never justify that sort of premium for this particular car.

2002 BMW Z3 3.0 vs. 2000 BMW M Coupe

Given that it is wagon week, I was torn whether to include the two following Bimmers as examples of the breed. The M Coupe and Z3 Coupe do cut a bit of a shooting brake profile, but these are unique sports cars that were a creation not by committee, but rather, outright enthusiasts. The M variants of these three-doors are getting a bit on the pricey side, but the 3.0 liter Z3 Coupe offers lively performance at a lesser price. So which one would you choose? First, let’s look at the relatively rare Z3 Coupe.

The car has been maintained properly with the following most recent service items.
1. Oil change
4. Coolant Flush
5. Brake Fluid Flush
6. Rear Differential and Manual Transmission Flush.

At the price, this M Coupe is close to what similar S52 engined examples are pulling, which is usually in the high teens and low $20k range. If this was an S54 with similar mileage, it would certainly be priced closer to $30,000. The mods done to this car are rather tasteful and it appears things could be put back to stock fairly easily if so desired. With prices of earlier M iron skyrocketing, it might be prudent to pull the trigger on one of these sports coupes before things get way out of hand.

How Do You Take Your Estoril?

Estoril is regarded as one of the best blues ever produced, and while a similar shade has recently appeared on Mercedes, it will forever be a distinctly BMW color for me. I was first struck by this blue when it appeared on the first BMW M car I ever drove, a friend’s E36 M3 sedan. It later appeared on the BMW M Coupes and Roadsters and the X5, creating the best-looking examples of all.

No surprise, then, that my first Estoril car is an E36 M3. Unfortunately this example comes with the diminishing automatic, but it’s in great condition after just 75k miles. If you don’t have the use of your left leg, it’d be a great car. Low-mileage examples of the fantastically-handling but least-extreme M3 are holding strong in the mid-teens, making it a great performance bargain.

Up for auction is a Beautiful Low mileage1998 BMW M3. This is one of the nicest E36 M3’s I have ever seen. It is a One-Owner car that has been babied its whole life. The car was originally sold at Motorwerks BMW of Bloomington, MN. The original owners then moved to Scottsdale, AZ in 2002 where the car remained since. It was owned by an older couple who drove the car sparingly and always garaged it. It is bone stock and has never been modified! Its on overall Excellent condition and now it is looking a second owner to love and care for it!

Next up, we have one of my favorite BMWs ever, the Z3-based BMW M Coupe. This earlier 1999 model shares the smooth (if Euro-jealous) 240hp S52 inline-6. In addition to the epic clownshoe shape, they came in Estoril, cementing their place as an oddly-gorgeous classic. This example has just barely cracked 100k miles and features a matching interior. That leather isn’t my favorite choice, and neither are the unnecessary wheel spacers, but with no-reserve and lacking the highly sought-after and more expensive S54, this could be a great snag.

Lastly, we have a car produced decades before Estoril began beautifying the streets, the classic 2002. A well done restoration with some subtle liberties taken, it’s a truly striking little car. Bidding is starting at a reasonable level, but with the reserve still on it’s tough to determine how much of the claimed $25k in receipt the seller expects back.

Show you’re Z Man: 2000 Z3 M Roadster and 2006 Z4 M Coupe

Last week I speculated in my Z Coupe post that we were seeing a good opportunity to get into some of the rarest BMWs offered on these shores, the Z coupes. While those two Z coupes were the non-M version and both were trick in their own way, it seems most of you prefer to see the M versions. I get it; they’re fast, flashy and fun, so today I cooked up an interesting comparison again between the E36/7 and E36/8s – this time a Z4 M coupe against a Z3 M roadster. Let’s start with the brilliant looking Imola Red coupe:

If you are looking for the rare E86 M Coupe then you already know that it is regarded by BMW Enthusiasts as the last true Ultimate Driving Machine before BMWs became too electronic and took the fun out of driving with adjustable suspensions, turbochargers, automated transmissions and buttons to adjust the steering, exhaust note and everything else. Here’s a quick background so you know how much I truly love these cars. I was an intern for AutoWeek magazine in college when this car had its press introduction in the US. One of our editors drove one back to Detroit and I took it out for gas and a car wash. I immediately fell in love with the classic long hood, short deck proportions, the unbelievably responsive drivetrain, the seats that felt like they were custom made for me and the thickest little steering wheel I had ever set hands on. I vowed to myself to buy one when I could afford it. So in late 2008 I started conducting a nationwide search almost nightly (with only about 1,800 built in ’06-’08, you have to look nationwide for these cars) looking for a low mileage car with carbon leather trim, heated seats, the premium package and the VERY RARE extended leather package. I finally found an Imola Red M that fit all the options, it was a one owner just traded in at Asheville BMW in Asheville, NC and only had 7,500 miles on it and BMW had certified it as a pre-owned car and extended the warranty. Not surprisingly, I bought it the next day and it has been my pride and joy since. It is stored in mid November and comes out around the first of May. In the 4.5 years I’ve owned it I have put about 2,500 miles on it each year and it sits covered in my garage otherwise. The ONLY reason I’m selling it is because I’m getting married in July and will be buying a house soon. As you can see in the pictures the car is complete with 2 factory keys, all the books/manuals/DVD/original window sticker in the leather BMW binder. I have only had it at the BMW dealer once to replace the driver’s seat belt that was not retracting well and they serviced it under BMW’s free maintenance plan. The computer is not calling for the next service for another 9,500 miles. I replaced the battery in 2012. Since I drive the car so easily the OE Continental tires still have good tread left on them. The only thing I can think of that should be done in the next year is to have the front brake rotors resurfaced.

Factory Options included:
$1,800 – Extended leather option (covers center console, doors and sun visors in leather and make the interior look and fell much more premium. This option is VERY RARE.)
$2,500 Premium Package (best part of this package is the 10-speaker Hi-Fi stereo that sounds amazing)
Carbon Leather Interior trim (very neat looking leather finish around the center console and on the dash facing)
$500 Heated seats
$1,800 DVD Nav system with flip up screen

I’ve also included a picture showing the most significant rock chip located on the passenger side rear wheel flare. This wheel is also the only wheel with any curb rash and it is very minor. Trust me, I’m not happy that it’s there either. I could try to get a picture of it and email it to you if you are concerned. There are a few very light scratches here and there but they did not photograph even well enough to see and the car has been detailed regularly.

If you’re looking for a sports car that is a joy to drive and own, don’t buy a Corvette. Buy something rare like this that you won’t see in your neighborhood. In fact, I’ve only EVER seen one other M Coupe in Michigan. Remember, only 380 were built in 2006. The seats are amazing, the highly tuned straight six engine just builds power toward the 8,000 rpm redline, the 6-speed manual is a joy and the comfort features and great stereo make any trip a delight. Feel free to contact me with any questions. As you can tell I love to talk about these cars.

Note: Most of these pictures are from 2009 shortly after I bought the car but you’d never know I didn’t take them yesterday. Car is certainly one of the cleanest low mileage M Coupes left that is still Factory Stock in every way. Car may accumulate more miles if Michigan blesses me with some beautiful Fall days!

Just about everything about this car is perfect to me. I guess if pushed, I’d prefer Techno Violet as the color, but otherwise, it’s spot on. I had a student at a BMW Driver’s Education with a Techno Violet Z4 M Coupe and was totally floored by the out-of-the-box performance. It drove like a race car – and at race car speeds – but had the comfort of a streetable coupe. As a complete package, this car compares very favorably to late model 911s but at effectively half the price of most. To some, though, these small coupe interiors can be a bit claustrophobic. Why not drop the top then and look into that bright blue sky in this Evergreen Z3 M Roadster:

This is indeed a pretty rare color combination and probably should be the signature color for this car. It’s a neat shade and seems to suit the shape well, with a flashy but still appropriate degree of aggressiveness. I’m not such a huge fan of the matching leather, but if you’re going all in, why not. At about half the price of the M Coupe this car offers plenty of thrills, a spectacular soundtrack out the back, and miles of open sky above you. It’s not a race car but again compared to what you’d get in a 911 or Boxster convertible, this car compares reasonably favorably and stands out from the crowd a bit more – at least around me, Boxster and 911 convertibles are a dime a dozen; there aren’t too many days that I don’t see them, but M Roadsters and M Coupes are very rare sights indeed.

If it were my money I’d have to go with the Z4 coupe. I know it’s twice the price, but I was so surprised by how that package drove and felt, even years later it sticks in my mind. It’s hard to say you’d go wrong with either, though; drive them lightly and they’re not likely to lose much if any value over the next few years. Which one would you have?

Future Collectables? 1999 Z3 2.8 Coupe and 2008 Z4 3.0si Coupe

Recently, Rob wrote up a pristine and well priced Z3 M Coupe and hinted that this will be a future collectable. I have to agree; they’re rare cars to see, they had a neat design, great driving characteristics and the limited production numbers guaranteed exclusivity. Like Rob, I remember well my first drive in one of these Z Coupes; it was a Imola Red Z3 M Coupe and the BMW rep said to me “I just ate my lunch, so don’t go crazy, okay?” It was a fun rocket ship in a clever package that looked like it wanted to beat you up. Great, so go grab one and wait for it to appreciate, right? Well, not so fast; while the M versions of both the Z3 and Z4 were quite desirable, there is a slightly less traveled road to take if you care to speculate. Welcome, then, to the quite rare non-M versions of both the Z coupes; today we’re looking at a Z4 3.0si Coupe and a Z3 2.8 Coupe. Let’s start with the Z4:

Year: 2008

The 2008 BMW Z4 roadster comes in three models (3.0i, 3.0si, and M), and coupes come in two trims (3.0si and M). Each trim brings different engines underhood. The 3.0i is powered by a 215-horsepower, 3.0L in-line six-cylinder engine, while the 3.0si gets a more powerful, 255-horsepower version of the 3.0L; both have Valvetronic variable valve lift. The top-of-the-range M includes a 330-horsepower, 3.2L six. All three models come with a six-speed manual gearbox, but a six-speed Steptronic automatic transmission with steering-wheel shift paddles is optional on the 3.0i and 3.0si.Roadsters have a fully automatic power folding soft top, with dual-layer material, an aluminum and magnesium frame for light weight, and a heated rear window. The Z4’s proportions, with a long hood and a rearward seating position, allow for an excellent weight distribution and good dynamics for high-performance driving. The 3.0i and 3.0si models have electric power steering, while the M has a hydraulic power steering system. Coupes get a special performance-optimized suspension calibration, and all Z4s come with run-flat tires.Inside, the Z4’s interior is rather tight, as can be expected from a small two-seater, but it is appointed with luxurious upholster and trim. The dash is trimmed in either wood or brushed aluminum; 3.0i models have faux-leather upholstery inside, while the 3.0si gets “High Performance” leather upholstery in one of four color schemes. The 3.0si also adds automatic climate control, and its top, THX-certified audio system has ten speakers, seven-band digital sound processing, and two subwoofers.M models get a number of high-performance improvements and appearance enhancements, including M Dynamic Driving Control, a system that allows the driver to change the characteristics of throttle response along with other variables. There’s also a semi-dry sump lubrication system, computer-controlled variable differential lock, a heavy duty clutch, a performance-oriented version of BMW’s dynamic stability control which includes dynamic brake control and cornering brake control, cross-drilled special-compound four-wheel disc brakes, and larger front and rear stabilizer bars. Inside, the M models also get Nappa leather seat trim with firmer side bolsters, automatic climate control, white-on-black gauges, a thicker steering wheel, and brushed aluminum trim.A Premium Package brings power sport seats with memory, auto-dimming mirrors, and Bluetooth, while a Sport Package includes Dynamic Driving Control (similar to that in the M), a sportier suspension, and larger 18-inch wheels. Standalone options include a headlight cleaning system, extended leather upholstery, a navigation system, M sport seats, and heated seats.

This is a one of a kind BMW Z4 coupe. There were only a few hundred BMW Z4 coupes imported to the US in 2008, and there are no known to be equipped with this color combination and this array of options.

I purchased this vehicle when it had 1600 miles. It was previously a demo vehicle for BMW corporate. For its life I have meticulously maintained this vehicle. It is not a primary driver in my car collection and typically has been driven only on warm sunny days at a vacation home in Maine. It has never seen snow and has only been rarely caught in the rain. Four new tires were placed at 30,000 miles. The rims were professionally refinished at this time as well to relieve minor scuffs. A full service oil change was conducted in August 2013. The exterior is in generally good condition. There are some minor paint imperfections due to road spray which is consistent with a car of this age and mileage. The leather interior is also in good condition with only minor wear consistent with mileage. There is no history of any accidents. I fully own the vehicle and possess a clean title.

I will provide 2 sets of keys, the original BMW Z4 manual in its leather case, and copy of the original window sticker. The buyer is responsible for shipping.

The first thing that stood out to me on this car were the wheels, and they grabbed my attention because I had never seen them, anywhere. Not only that, no one at GCFSB had seen them before. Personally, I love them! Top that off with a great looking and classic color combination and this is one seriously slick package. It seems like the owner has been very good to the car and is an enthusiast, providing some great information about the car. With low but not museum-low mileage, this offers a great opportunity to get into a seriously rare BMW. I’ve seen many more M coupes than I have non-M, something that I think could be said for most individuals. Driving this Z4 will let you fly under the radar without the M flashiness but still have a very rare and exclusive car. But perhaps if the fluid looks of the Z4 aren’t quite for you, you’d prefer an equally rare bit of BMW history – a Z3 2.8 coupe:

While I’m not a fan of the red/black combination of this particular example, there is no denying that this is a great looking car that is certainly unique. Similar to the Z4, I often see Z3 M Coupes but rarely see the non-M version. Loose the window tint and I really think this car would look a little more subdued. It is a great affordable package to have fun in, and if you don’t rack up a ton of miles I think this car will retain value.

Keep these cars in their stock configuration, drive them on weekends and special events, and I really think they’re not likely to cost you much money in the long run. Running costs of the non-Ms is a bit lower than the M models, and while neither will blow your socks off leaving the line, they’re not exactly slow, either. The future owners of these pieces of BMW history will be enjoying a truly rare site, and I really think in another 10-15 years these will be highly valued; it wouldn’t surprise me to see clean examples keep up with M values given their rarity. If it were my money, I’d pick up the Z4; I love the Z3s but something about that Z4 package really ticks the right boxes for me!

Which one would you have?

1999 BMW M Coupe

I still remember the excitement I and a friend of mine had when the M Coupe first debuted. Neither of us had ever cared much for the Z3 and while the M Roadster was better it still missed the mark for us in some way. When word first reached our ears that there would be a Z3-based M Coupe, our interest was piqued but with some hesitation. As we heard a bit more and after seeing an alluring teaser photo of the quad exhaust and wide rear fenders peaking from underneath a car cover our hesitations vanished and we were suddenly enraptured. Once the car was unveiled it was as if all of the flaws of the Z3 were gone. While the shooting-brake has never really been a popular style during my lifetime, there was something about the design of the M Coupe that we really loved. Naturally, we wanted to take one for a drive. The car did not let us down: good power and nice steering feel to go along with a well-balanced and grippy chassis. And then there was that quirky styling. It fit the car: part hooligan, part sophisticate. As the years have passed, these cars, which were never produced in large numbers, have earned their proper place amongst enthusiasts right next to the M3. Which brings us to the car featured here: a 1999 Arctic Silver BMW M Coupe on offer from our reader John who is located just outside of Chicago.

Well maintained. Very good interior and good exterior. Never smoked in. Second owner and personally driven since 30k miles. Stock – no performance modifications.

Your opportunity to own a rare and iconic modern BMW. With less than 3000 M Coupes sold in the US this car is destined to become a classic, but someone should drive and enjoy this one today.

I’m the second owner of this BMW M Coupe and have personally driven it since 30,000 miles. No kids or teenage drivers. The car is tight, fast and fun with exceptional handling. I have the records of regular maintenance. This is an unadulterated Coupe – I have not made any performance mods to this car.

If you realize this is the time to enjoy an M Coupe while you can, please call or text 847-287-7321 with questions. Serious buyers only please.

For a car with quite a few miles on it, this M Coupe looks impeccable as both the exterior and the interior present remarkably well. Even better, it remains unmolested and in original condition. This is a car that has been driven and with regular maintenance should still provide plenty of enjoyable miles. And really, that’s the great thing about a car with higher mileage. There are increased risks of mechanical failure, sure, but that mileage also brings with it a lower price and the knowledge that as a buyer you are free to enjoy this car as much as you want. The M Coupe was always a driver’s car and should be driven. Though I rarely seen one these days, when I do these cars always turn my head.

1999 BMW M Roadster

The Z3 was, from its inception, an unappreciated car in my opinion. It was initially criticized for not having enough power from the 1.9 inline-4 cylinder – even James Bond barely drove his for 30 seconds when he got it, then promptly gave it away to an unfit American in a symbolic British taunting of the Germans. They still haven’t gotten over the fact that the Axis powers do roadsters better than they did. When the Z3 did gain power, first with the addition of the M52 and then finally on US shores with a full-fledged M motor, criticism shifted to the “dated” rear suspension and BMW’s grab at the E30 parts bin. Subsequently, both the E30 and E36 have been lauded by enthusiasts as great handling cars, but the Z3 remains a bit of an outsider for most. As a result, for not a huge outlay you can seat yourself in a powerful, rear drive roadster capable of crossing the deserts of the Middle East (when properly equipped and supported by the BBC’s budget). Most of these roadsters were outfitted in typically sedate German tones, but a few were specified in brighter shades, like today’s ultra-low mileage Dakar Yellow 1999:

While I know the yellow isn’t to everyone’s liking, it’s certainly unique and not something you see every day. To me, certain colors define the car, and Dakar seems to suit this shape well; it is stylish, eye catching, and yet has an understated aggressiveness that accentuates the car. If you’re going to get one of these cars, why not be shouty about it? Not understated at all are the original alloys, combining a hyper silver look with that outrageous offset. They’re a perfect reminder that at heart, this is a German muscle car. Like the American muscle cars, there is a devoted following to these Ms, and they even have a website that neatly tracks production numbers; if you’re curious, this is one of 95 1999s in this spec and certainly the one in best condition.

Most earlier M Roadsters are priced in the mid-teens considering the mileage and the non-S54 power plant. This car is an obvious exception; although I think the dealer is asking very high, this is a effectively a brand new M Roadster and likely the lowest mileage example anywhere. The S52 cars aren’t as desirable right now, but the reality is that with the top down you can get 95 plus percent of the same smiles out of this car. While I don’t think the Z3 design has aged nearly as well as the Audi TT has, this car is a much better performance value. Pick one of these up, drive for a few years on the weekends and through the summer and fall, and more likely than not you’ll be able to break even or perhaps turn a profit if your timing is right. If you ever wanted an investment-grade M, this might be the right one to buy. My bet is that the odd colored cars like this one will be the ones setting the market in just a few years.
