1973 Porsche 914 2.0L

In the Porsche world the 914 has become, I don’t want to say forgotten but, a bit of an afterthought. The 914 served as the replacement to the 912 as Porsche’s entry-level automobile and like the 912 it primarily came with a flat-four engine delivering power to the rear wheels via a 5-speed manual transmission. However, that is where their similarities would end. While the 912 was basically a 911 with a smaller engine, the 914 was an entirely different design altogether: a 2-seater mid-engine Targa. While Porsche eventually ceased production of the 914 in order to make way for the 924 (an entry-level coupe that went in an entirely different direction), the 914 was well regarded, and sold well, due to its simplicity and balance. During the first few years of production, the 914 was also available with the 2.0 liter flat-six of the 911T, but due to poor sales that model was discontinued prior to the 1973 model year. Its replacement was the car we have featured here: a 1973 Porsche 914 with a 2.0 liter flat-four, rather than the standard model’s 1.7 liter engine.

Alaska Blue with Black interior. I will be the first to admit that I didn’t fully appreciate this unique car until I saw it, inspected it and drove it. I then understood it. It is one of the most original and authentic old school Porsches I have ever worked with. It’s currently owned by the second owner from new and has just under 30,000 original and documented miles on it. The paint is original, the interior looks factory fresh and everything is exactly where it ought to be. It’s a clean and honest example of an early 914 and for anyone searching for this type of vehicle, it is exactly the right kind of car to seek out.
This 914 was originally sold in Colorado on April 30, 1973 and stayed with that first owner until February 28, 2012 at which time it was purchased by 914 specialist, Auto Atlanta. Mileage at the time was 28,922, approximately 600 miles less than the current reading. The current owner purchased the car from Auto Atlanta in 2012 with plans of owning for the next 39 years but successive career related moves have made that impractical. It is now offered for sale and presents a unique opportunity to the right buyer. A Porsche Certificate of Authenticity has been requested but 914 experts have informed me that it is further unique because it likely came without the Appearance Group. All chassis and VINs match in all locations on the car and it comes with its original manual showing the original stamps. The preliminary inspection found everything in working order. Although the inspection was done without the aid of a lift, no rust was in evidence anywhere on the car. (see additional photos by requesting link).
Recent service including new tires and fuel pump has this car starting and running to perfection. And although this car will almost surely appreciate in value, it should be purchased to be driven because it is a blast to drive. It inspires confidence and brings a quick smile to anyone’s face.
My thanks to George and Tom and others on the 914Club forum for their guidance and 914 tutorage it is greatly appreciated.

Cars like the 914 are just asking to be shown in brighter colors and this one doesn’t disappoint. The Alaska Blue paint looks in good condition and while the depth of the color is difficult to gauge in these pictures, the car still provides good pop and brightness. The interior looks great and shows little wear, which we should expect in a car with less than 30k miles. While the 914 lacks the timeless styling of the 911, its light weight and relative simplicity have provided it with enough agility and power to satisfy owners for many years and low mileage examples such as this one are certain to continue that trend. Unlike the 911, 914 prices have remained mostly stable showing little appreciation or depreciation over the past few years. So while this car is unlikely to have steady appreciation ahead of it, it’s also unlikely to depreciate much, if at all, either. Cars like that always offer a nice opportunity: buy it, enjoy it, and, when it’s time to sell, get most of your buying cost back in return.

Note quite original. All 1973 914 2.0s came with the appearance group which consisted of things like the center console, front and rear sway bars and also chrome bumpers and fog lights. This car has neither. Also the sail panels should be vinyl covered not body colored. I’ve not looked closely at the rest of it so far although clearly the 914 emblem has been improperly placed likely when this car was painted perhaps.

The fact that the certificate of authenticity was not able to be obtained is a red flag imo…potentially since this was not originally a 2.0 car — assume the worst and then go about proving that assumption wrong.
