1984 Volkswagen Atlantic GLS Coupe

The…what? Clearly that’s a Jetta, right? Well, you’re both right and wrong at the same time. The Jetta was marketed as several different names across the globe, including Bora and Vento in Europe. In Mexico, though, the first generation was known as the Atlantic, and here today we have one of those that has relocated to the US. While it looks pretty racey on the BBS wheels with the lowered stance, you’ll not find many other go-faster bits on it. Still, if you want to cause some head scratches at the next VW meet…

1984 Volkswagen Atlantic GLS Coupe on eBay:

From the seller:

1984 VOLKSWAGEN ATLANTIC GLS with 79k kilometers. This model has a I4 ENGINE, MANUAL GEARBOX, BBS WHEELS, AND 4 WATERFALL TIRES MATCHING ALL AROUND. Please look at ALL THE PICTURES.

Aside from the aforementioned suspension and BBS wheel modifications, this one appears to be pretty stock. That’s probably a good thing if you want to add your own flavor or have a mostly reliable (albeit slow) ride.

The airbox setup doesn’t look familiar to me, so I’m wondering if this was a motor that wasn’t sold in the US – these cars had everything from a 1.1L through the more familiar 1.7-1.8L motors we saw in them here. Bidding it already at $8k but there is a reserve, so I’d guess that the dealer is probably hoping for mid teens to have this one find a new home. While not a very desirable specification in many ways, it’s a cool and unusual car that appears to be very clean – so as a base chassis, it might be worth it to the right person.

That looks like a shed load of fun! I’m a little wobbly on the restomod thing, but this looks like a great candidate for a little DIY garage fun that could be hoot with a little more more displacement.
