1986 Mercedes-Benz 560SL

$_4 (1)

After sizing up that Audi A5 in Teak Brown over the weekend, I came across this lovely, low mileage 1986 Mercedes-Benz 560SL in a not often seen shade of Manganese Brown. Metallic browns have made a comeback recently on cars, no longer being a hue relegated to the decade which brought us disco, an oil crisis and Mayor Ed Koch. The 560SL is one of those German classics that has been rising in visibility amongst collectors. As such, values are beginning to push upwards for what is likely to be the next SL collector vehicle domino to fall. The appear small, but they drive like a much bigger vehicle, if the few I’ve had the chance to pilot over the years are any indication. The legendary bank vault construction is there but the ride quality has a decidedly soft nature about it. They are immensely capable as grand touring machines, but have a bit of float on the twisty bits with the nose rising under acceleration, almost giving you the feel as if you are on a small boat.

For sale is a stunning Mercedes-Benz 560SL with only 59,150 original miles!

This car is beautiful inside and out.

The 560sl is accident free and has a clean Carfax.

It comes in one of its most rare, sought after color combinations Manganese Brown with Palomino interior.

It is truly a beautiful and super elegant car!

The paint looks gorgeous and is deep rich and shiny.

The car is very straight with no dings, dents or damage.

Both tops are in excellent condition as you can see in the pictures.

The soft top, seats and carpets were just replaced and look outstanding.

All wood parts are in excellent condition with only minimal cracking.

The wheels look like new and the tires are very fresh.

The Mercedes has no known mechanical issues at all!

Everything works as it should.

The a/c blows ice cold and the steering is very tight.

The 560sl drives and shifts very smooth like you would expect from a low mileage classic Mercedes-Benz.

This is a very nice example of a 560sl, don’t let this one slip away.

The color really looks amazing and is sure to get compliments and turn heads.

We serviced the car throughout and it needs nothing but a new owner!

We took a lot of pictures so you can judge for yourself.

The car is currently driven for test drives, so the mileage at the date of sale might be slightly higher.

Truth be told, I was always more partial to Garnet Red on the late production R107s, but this medium brown hue does look rather fetching over the Palomino leather interior. It used to be that you could pick up a clean, lower mileage 560SL for around the $15,000 mark, however, these days, you’ll be doing well if you can snag one for around $20,000. We saw a 1989 560SL with 38k miles sell for $21,000 about a year ago. The ask for this 1986 example is just about right, considering that a year has passed and this is more of an excellent driver than museum piece.

Yes, values are going up fast. I recently bought a very low mile 1989 560 SL in extremely good condition. The insurance company appraised it above the Hagerty 1 valuation and put it at $46,000. I paid aprox. $10,000 less… great investment return in 1 month.
I would like to correct the comment about “the nose rising under acceleration, almost giving you the feel as if you are on a small boat”. This comment does not apply to the ‘1989’ 560 SL. Mercedes fixed the problem and the rise of the nose ‘like a boat’ no longer happens.

IIRC the 1986 through 1989 cars were identical except that the 86 had a larger third brake light. Two years ago I sold my father’s 86 which he bought new and I took car of from day 1. I had every record for the car. New Top and major service done, 94k miles. I think we sold it for 10 grand. It was a pretty straight car, no paint work. The leather in the seats was a little dry but no cracks. Over all a pretty tidy nice example. The color probably held it back a little, Maroon with the tan interior and brown top. I enjoyed the car for what it was.

Classic looking cars which were mostly designed in the 60’s and 70’s. They drive like boats, not much in the way of performance and they drifted a lot, you sort of guided it down the road. Great Looking cars. The steering wheel was the size of a bus wheel LOL. We never had much of a problem with the car, about the biggest issue we ever had was the alternator going when the miles were in the 80’s and the car was 30 years old.

Nice to see them having their day in the sun. Not sure I would pay the price for one of them now. They made a lot of them with various motors over the decades. The preceding gen with the 380 motor is the least desirable of the lot. The 450 motor was a good one. If you can find one, the one to own was the ROW car the 500 SL. Much much better performance, better suspension, lighter weight ( sort of funny because they were all very heavy cars), the styling was a bit more aggressive too with the smaller bumpers and euro lights.
