2002 BMW M3 Coupe

There has been an increasing amount of focus on the E46 CSL and just what a special car it was. The bad news is that if you really wanted one, they were expensive a few years ago and have not gotten any cheaper. The good news is that most of the CSL stuff can be procured and you can make your own replica; though, properly done, they’re not much cheaper.

Today’s car is a bit less dear than the one above, though it also did not start life as a Competition Package example, nor was it as thoroughly done. Still, it looks pretty convincing at first glance – let’s take a look.

So there are some really great bits here; the Alcantara upholstery mimics the CSL, as do the body pieces and BBS wheels. The Recaro seats are fantastic, as well. The car is said to have upgraded suspension, rod bearings, and a subframe reinforcement, along with a replacement clutch. The price? Well, pretty high for a 90k mile example, frankly. But buy a lesser one and take it to a shop, saying “Make it like this one”, and my guess is that you won’t come out for much less money. You’ve got several grand in seats and reupholstery, several grand in wheels, and many thousands in body parts and paintwork – nevermind the mechanical aspects, depending on their quality. If you want a turn-key CSL replica, this one doesn’t look like a horrible deal – I just wish it had “that” intake.

$60k for an e46? No thanks. I really hope the bubble pops on cars like this.

These are not 60k cars in any way. I have owned one for the past 6 years and they are needy, deeply flawed cars. I do have “that” intake and 20k less miles on my CSL wannabe. I think the car drives great for 20k-25k but for 60k I’d rather have a GT350 or some form of 911.

This is ridiculous. It is a 90k mile M3 that looks like a CSL, but without the 300 lb weight savings or the 360 hp engine. At least it has the right transmission:)
