2012 Volkswagen Golf R

In 2012 Volkswagen brought the U.S. the spiritual successor to the Golf Limited – the Mk. 6 Golf R. Gone was the VR6, replaced by the more potent and tunable 2.0T that could now be specified with a manual and all-wheel drive, and importantly in 4-door guise. Did I buy one? Nope, because this German wonder rang in at a shocking $36,000 with options. For a Golf, mind you. But once they started hitting the used market, to me they became more appealing. Unlike the R32, they dropped in price. And they still came in great colors, like today’s Rising Blue Metallic.

Golf R

There’s not much to go on by description here, but this particular Golf R looks really nice. It’s still wearing its original silver Talladega wheels, the leather appears to be in good shape, and the Rising Blue paint sparkles. There is no maintenance disclosed, but it does appear that the prior owner loved it. A quick internet search reveals that it’s been lowered with H&R suspension and tuned with APR software. Gripes? I’ve never liked the slightly separated exhaust arrangement on these; they’d look better either paired together or separated at the corners to me, like they did with more recent Golf Rs. But minor preference aside, I’d be happy to drive it. It sold in 2022 for $20,500, which is admittedly a better deal than the asking price today. But if you want a clean Rising Blue Golf R, there aren’t that many out there to choose from, amazingly.

I like it, except for the lowering, but my requirements are different given my age. I would prefer a closer to to stock suspension. I really like the the Mk6 R. I do agree about the exhaust though, it is a bit to stylized to my sensibilities.

Would have really liked this car when I was a young man but a little past that now but I still think it looks very good for the right age group
