Say you have under $10,000 to spend on a car. Do you do the sensible thing and go with a nearly new compact or subcompact that, if you are lucky, may have some of its factory warranty left? Or do you do tempt fate and go with that older luxury vehicle you’ve always been craving? Fortunately, there’s a middle of the road example: the W124 Mercedes-Benz E class. Rock solid build quality, relatively affordable running costs in comparison to other German iron of the era and a healthy dose of leather, wood and other goodies to comfort passengers. This Smoke Silver example for sale in Indiana has just over 63,000 miles on the odometer, leaving it barely broken in.

Back before EVERY DAMN CAR ON THE ROAD had gills/portholes/slices on the front fender, it was a distinctive mark on the BMW Z3. The silver slash that marked the M versions is even more eye-catching, and yanked my head around yesterday in the constant hunt for ///Ms. Today we have the wee beasty original M Roadster, a handsome convertible that may not have the following the Miata but certainly scores a few more masculinity points. This silver example has covered less than 35k miles on the not-quite-as-sweet S52 inline-6, which will help the price stay sane while keeping the exhaust note sweet.

Comments closedI’ve said before that the W116 is a love/hate car for me; most times, I see them and they just look like any tired old Benz; a bit out of proportion and over-bumpered. But then I see a great example, like some of the Euro-spec 6.9 models I’ve written up in the last few weeks, and I get a bit giddy. Though not really my dream car by any means, I can imagine cruising up to a Cars and Coffee event, or a German Car Day somewhere in my massive Benz. That vision is helped when I see one in full European trim; the slim bumper lines and cleaned up light clusters make it so much better. But while most of my adoration is levied upon those 6.9 models, this car might just change that. Compared the largest engine fitted in the W116 6.9, this car seems downright puny with only a 2.8 liter inline-6. What helps that, though, is the manual transmission and some of the missing luxuries that help lighten the load. Top it off with some AMG bits, and my does this car look tasty!

5 CommentsFamily life – it’s a mixed blessing. I could never have imagined the unintended consequences expanding my family by 50%; in terms of space consumed, physics and logic told me that there was no way that the amount of space required with a small child would increase any more than…say, 50%. Yet, the reality of adding to my family is that the amount of space required for even what seems like the most miniscule trip increases disproportionately to the size of the package that arrives. Babies are a bit like those magic sponges in a capsule I got when I was a kid; once they hit air, they expand to 200-300% the size they were. So, long story short, when you have a family you likely need more space.
Over the past few years we’ve seen a general backing away from wagons towards the bane of most enthusiast’s existence, the S.U.V. and the “crossover” – many of which are really just tall wagons. So what are the options if you want to maintain an enthusiast’s lifestyle whilst still surviving the onslaught of baby-themed items? Well, for around $10,000 you can get some pretty diverse rides – so let’s see what’s the one you’d choose:

11 CommentsNot a day goes by that I don’t consider selling my 2006 MINI Cooper S for a clean, lower mileage Porsche 944. It probably wouldn’t be the wisest financial decision I ever made, but every time I see one of these coupes from the 1980s with their wide fenders, funky wheels and pop-up headlamps I get the urge to pull the trigger. This 1983 944 for sale in Massachusetts is equipped with the base 2.5 liter engine, 5-speed manual and has just over 50,000 miles on the clock. Is there honestly a better way to relive your 1980s automotive fantasies for under $10,000?
