2015 BMW X6

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Sometimes, though, I wish the eye was that of Polyphemus. Do you know the story of Polyphemus? Better known as the ‘Cyclops’ from Homer’s great epic The Odyssey, the giant Polyphemus had it out for Odysseus and his men and was planning to eat them all. But Odysseus tricked him, getting him drunk and telling him that his name was “Nobody”. When Polyphemus passed out, Odysseus heated up a stake of wood and shoved it into Polyphemus’s remaining eye. The giant awoke, screaming “‘Nobody’ stabbed me!”, much to the amusement of his fellow giants who thought he was drunk and being tortured by the Gods. The story is apropos when considering the X6 for several reasons. First, though it’s a phrase often used when considering the X6, I believe it was Car and Driver who summarized the X6 as the answer to a question nobody was asking. Secondly, I bet you thought nobody could make the X6 uglier. But, you and I were both wrong as this custom X6 proves. In fact, this grotesque creation has me wishing Odysseus had stabbed me in the eyes:

Did you know that the internal model designation of the new X6 is ‘F16’? That’s about the only cool thing about it, and personally if I were General Dynamics I’d strongly consider suing BMW over that one. Okay, but what about this particular X6? Well, not satisfied that the F16 X6 is ridiculously large, they decided to make it bigger – as in 5 inches higher, 10 inches longer and a full foot wider. A foot. Have you seen a X6 before? The last thing it needs is to be a foot wider. The styling appears to be based upon Star Trek shuttlecraft technology crossed with the equally horrendous Maybach Excelero. So, ugly and unoriginal – a great combination. Inside we have Crocodile hides apparently from Italy. I was previously unaware that the Italians were known for Crocodile, so I guess I learned something. Ever wonder what Croc skin would feel like slamming you in the face in a airbag deployment? Wonder no more, though that could offer a solution to both the grotesque looks and the insane person who order it. Then there’s the note to customers, which bears repeating – the larger wheels result in an incorrect speedometer. Now, that by itself isn’t particularly funny or surprising. However, their custom solution of “get used to it” is, at least in my mind. Want to see how riveted the German crowd was on its debut? Check out the couldn’t-be-more-ambivalent faces of the very grey wearing Germans next to it in the picture above. Perhaps they just didn’t get it, as this is a car only for “‘bad boys'”. Did you see what I did there? I quoted them quoting someone, but who did they quote? Also funny is the asking price for this 1,500 hours worth of creative diarrhea at $144,500. Good news though – if you don’t like this one or it’s diesel drivetrain, they’ll make another on whatever X6 you want to send them.

Maybe I’m looking at this the wrong way. Perhaps, in retrospect, they’re offering a solution to all the horrible X6s out there. Death by disfigurement while simultaneously emptying the pockets of the would-be owners who thought it was a good idea. Brilliant plan, that.

    Hey Carter, tell me how you really feel. Hilarious, and I could not agree with you more. I wish the performance SUV, CUV trend would die. AGExcaliber? Is that the German division? There is a car company I thought was long dead.

    Now we know what the Toyota Mirai designers do in their spare time- design BMW body kits.

    Is it just me or does that front end look a heck of a lot like Bugs’ buck teeth and round rabbit cheeks?

    Also, those are 24s and they look like 18s. The usual appearance modifications are intended to make the vehicle look lower and more muscular, these are apparently intended to make it look like a “People of Walmart” contender.

    Seriously, though, this car obviously was built by amateurs. The fact that they’re unwilling to correct the speedometer is proof of their ineptitude. I suppose the design is like the speedometer error: the customer has to get used to it. By the way, the owner of the domain is Lithuanian- kinda explains some things.

    Carter – Your writing style in this article fits the Brobdingnagian proportions of this – thing – perfectly. (‘course, I’d expect as much from a fellow Rho-Dielandah.) In music, the word “prosody” refers to the ideal (ideally,) marriage of words and music;
    is there a term for the similar marriage of words and pictures? If there is, you got it.

    As for this tasteless monstrosity, I understand that the sheikh with the chrome AMG GTS is looking at it right now…
