If there was ever a car that looked more at home on the forecourt of a country club, it was the W124 series Mercedes E-class estate. This was a car synonymous with the well-heeled housewives or those summer jaunts to New England beaches. While utilitarian, this is a rather stately machine. Take it to the local market and you would have no problem finding this 300TD amongst the myriad of vanilla, look-alike SUVs jamming the parking lot. This 300TD for sale in British Columbia is a Canadian market car, but given its age of over 25 years, is legal for US importation.

1995 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe – RS Clone

I’m going to cut to the chase with this one: on appearance this is a wonderful looking Porsche 911. The Carrera RS from any model always attracts significant attention and obviously the version produced as part of the 993 model would be no different. The question with which we must grapple here is just how much is that fantastic appearance worth? The reason we must ask that is because here that is more or less all we get as the mechanical components of this 993 remain that of a standard Carrera Coupe. There’s no 300 hp 3.8 liter flat-six in the rear and the weight savings probably aren’t up to the full Carrera RS standard, though we should note that the interior modifications should result in some weight loss relative to other 993 coupes. With an asking price of $100,900 the cost of this Speed Yellow 1995 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe, outfitted as a Carrera RS, is nearly twice that of a standard Carrera of this vintage. Is it worth it?

Tuner Tuesday: 1989 Alpina B10 3.5/1

Alpina is a name which holds as much weight in enthusiast’s minds as names like AMG and Ruf, and for good reason. Since the infancy of BMW’s mainstream involvement in both motorsports and road cars, Alpina has been intrinsically linked to the marque and has developed some of the more memorable fast alternatives to BMW’s own M series. They have a different character; you could say they were less aggressive, but the signature Alpina Blue with large turbine wheels, character stripes and spoilers paired often with the combination of specially upholstered interiors replete with rich woods results in a package that many view is more special than the standard production cars. Their complete reworking of models right down to special engines and suspensions has resulted in a bespoke BMW made in limited quantities and with its own unique character:

Double Take: Porsche 993 Carrera Cabriolet

I can’t remember the last time I wrote about the Porsche 993 Cabriolet, assuming I ever have, so here I have two of them. Of all of the air-cooled models the 993 Cabriolet is the one I see most frequently on the streets today. This simply may be a coincidence of where I live, and after all they are the youngest of the air-cooled 911s on the road, but I still see the Cabriolet quite a bit more frequently than the 993 Coupe. All of that is to say that these remain quite popular and given the elegant shape of the 993 design it shouldn’t be too surprising that these open-top versions continue to grace our streets. The two we will look at here both come in excellent and rarely seen colors and each presents with pretty low mileage. These are cars likely destined for collectors, but that shouldn’t stymie our appreciation of them. We will begin with this Amaranth Violet 1995 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet, located in Missouri, with Black interior and 22,736 miles on it.

1977 Volkswagen Beetle

1977 Volkswagen Beetle

While I was wandering through Autostadt in Wolfsburg, Germany last month, perhaps one of the most significant cars I came across in the ZeitHaus was the golden Beetle that sat amongst the other exhibits. This was the millionth example produced. It’s rather remarkable that just ten short years after the end of World War II, Volkswagen would produce this many examples of the “people’s car.” In the late 1970s, production would wind down in Germany, with the last Beetle rolling off the line at the Emden plant in 1978. Production would continue on until 2003 in Puebla, Mexico, ending a magnificent chapter in automotive history. This 1977 Beetle for sale in Georgia represents the last year of US sales for the Beetle sedan. With under 10,000 miles on the odometer, this is one for the serious VW collector.
