1984 Mercedes-Benz 300D

grn1

Update 1/24/2018 – nearly a year and a half later, this car is still for sale at a slightly reduced price of $6,999 – getting closer to our valuation.

Another week, another diesel Mercedes-Benz. This one has a little more rarity thanks to fewer features than what we normally see. Manual transmission, manual windows, non-turbo diesel engine, cloth seat inserts but what you do get is European lights and bumpers finished over the wonderfully period-correct Thistle Green. So if you are looking for a bare-bones W123 diesel with a little bit of European flare, then this 300D north of Philadelphia might fit the bill.

1972 Volkswagen Type 2 Tandem Axle Flatbed

VW1

Custom conversions can either go really well, or really poorly. Most of the time it is really poorly. But not today. What started life as a Volkswagen Type 2 factory single cab dropside pick-up is now a flatbed hauler with an extra axle thrown on there for good measure. Now before you get excited about that extra axle, it’s only along for the ride as it looks like only the second axle is functional. Once I started digging into the (sparse) information on this T2,  it was built and used to be a working car hauler — save for one big problem. So let’s check out this once Californian T2 that now resides in the Netherlands.

Mobile Office: 2015 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

S1

My company has a corporate office near Philadelphia with a handful of branch offices scattered in the Mid-Atlantic region. So twice a year, the CEO of my company visits the branches to give a ”state of the union” talk to employees. It’s about a five hour trip from Philadelphia to my office outside of Pittsburgh. Now this past spring when he started his speech, he said something that made me shake my head. No, it wasn’t that weren’t getting raises again this year (don’t worry, we didn’t). It was that he was tired from his five hour drive. Now this is a CEO who has a Harvard MBA, who makes decisions that impact thousands people and is compensated in the high six-figures. So I had to explain to my co-workers how crazy it is that our CEO is wasting his time driving instead of you know, working. After I explained to them that he is getting paid roughly $300 an hour to drive here, they got my point. So not only is he wasting 10 hours driving to our office twice a year, but he’s wasting his time driving to our seven other branches. You can see how this adds up. This brings me to today’s featured listing, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van. Specifically, this Sprinter that is setup to be a mobile office for people who make $300 an hour but don’t waste their time sitting on the Pennsylvania Turnpike because one of the tunnels is closed. Just to wrap up the story, I’m not saying our CEO needs a $79,000 Mercedes van to shuttle him around (because we didn’t get those raises, remember?), but at least a Lincoln Town Car so he can at least pretend he’s working in the back of it.

1992 Mercedes-Benz 500SL

grn1

A new week, a new R129. This reason I chose this 500SL was of course this wonderfully 90s color of Teal Blue Metallic combined with Lago Metallic. It’s one of those love it or hate color combinations that are tied to an era. You don’t see a lot of colors like these on new cars, if any. But I think of it like the rainbow of colors from the 70s and 80s that were featured on the W115, W123, R113, and so on. These crazy color combos are now admired over the typical sliver, black or even worse, tan. The thing is, color combinations like this only work if they are taken care of. And this 1992 500SL for sale in St. Louis certainly looks like it was.

2008 Mercedes-Benz CLK63 AMG Black Series

blk1

From ”I leased my spouse one” to ”Yeah, look up DTM on Wikipedia, you’ll see” is what the base CLK is to the roided-up Black Series. That, and about another $90,000. We’ve covered the Black Series cars fairly well on GCFSB so I don’t want to ramble on, but I think AMG did the best job they could given what Mercedes gave them in the CLK. A mix of C-Class chassis with E-Class features, the W209, even with AMG guise, was never the most hardcore sports coupe made compared to the holy grail BMW M3 that is fawned over. But when AMG teased the US with the CLK-DTM and finally gave us a taste with the CLK63 AMG Black Series, it was everything that we didn’t know we wanted. So if you are looking for a little piece of DTM heaven, let’s check out this 2008 for sale in California.

1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SL

green1

Just over a month ago, I featured a 1971 Pagoda that is so similar to today’s car that I actually thought it was the same car when I first looked at the listing. Luckily, it’s not, but I thought I’d investigate this one a little further because who doesn’t love a nice Pagoda? (except that forsaken 1969 in NYC we all screamed in horror over) So lets take a look at this surprisingly reasonably priced 280SL located in Queens, NY.

1999 Mercedes-Benz A160 Häkkinen Edition

A1

It’s been almost four years since the last time we featured the W168 A160 and probably for good reason. One of the most disappointing projects that Mercedes ever green-lighted, the W168 makes the W203 feel like a W100 600 in terms of quality. Thankfully the United States market was never stricken with this front-wheel drive piece of late 1990s design trends on wheels. But that wasn’t enough. Somewhere along the line the product managers at Daimler AG got drunk had a meeting and decided they wanted to honor the great F1 driver Mika Häkkinen. So what other way than his own special edition car? It’s just that car happened to be one that flipped over if it saw a moose. If you feel like cracking this over-sized egg for sale in the Netherlands to peek inside then let’s break this one down.

2004 Mercedes-Benz Unimog U500

Mogg1

Earlier this week I featured a 2004 Unimog U500 that was the ultimate motorsports support vehicle. Today another 2004 U500 is on the auction block that can perhaps be the ultimate utilitarian workhorse. The OM906LA diesel motor inside this truck makes 811 ft/lbs of torque that, like I said earlier, is enough torque to pull a house off its foundation. But this U500 located in Colorado offers much more than just a bunch of torque and 395(!) series tires.

2008 Maybach 57S

May1

There is depreciation. Then there is German car depreciation. Then way on another planet there is Maybach 57S depreciation. If you walked into one of the 42 United States Maybach dealers in 2008 and took home the car pictured above, it would of cost you a little north of $400,000. Now a short eight years later you can take home that same car pictured above for $63,800. It’s fully serviced and ready to go as well. Not some kind of click-bait photo tricks where you see a cheap listing on eBay that just shows the front of the car only to find out the rear end has smashed in by a cement truck at 55mph. If you are still interested in this 57S located outside of Albany, NY, then let’s try to break this one down rationally.

2004 Mercedes-Benz Unimog U500

mog1

Usually when we feature the Unimog on this site, they are of the older variety that are used as absolute outdoor workhorses. Snowblower, construction equipment, military special forces and the list goes on. With six-figure price tags when new, these beasts were often overkill and over-budget for the majorty of the population who need work trucks. But for those who need a massive truck that offers everything and more, this U500 in Texas spec’d out with a massive box and a handful of goodies inside, this Mog should be right up your alley.
