While low mileage, pristine condition Porsches almost seem cliche, finding an Audi with not much distance covered just doesn’t happen very often. When it does, it seems to inevitably be a model that no one is particularly excited about. That’s unfortunate, because often those models are quite competent performers, indeed. Growing off of the Audi Space Frame Concept from 1993, the A8 was the replacement for the short lived V8 quattro. Although the V8 had only been in production for a few years when the ASF was built, the Type 44 chassis was already quite old so a replacement was fitting. And Audi really outdid itself, with a modern, clean design based around lightweight aluminum technology. Underneath, the initial A8 didn’t offer revolution but instead built on the technology incorporated into the advanced for the time V8 quattro. Over its life, though, the A8 became a world-class leading sedan with steadily increasing technology and power output. For the most part, though, what most people remember are the post 2001 changes; introduction for the U.S. market of the long-wheel base A8L and sporty S8. That’s unfair to the often unloved and seldom seen early models which were very similar and quite competent in their own right. Running across a 1999 A8 with only 50,000 miles is rare enough that you might not see it again in the U.S. and offers you the opportunity to get into a nearly new top flight executive sedan:

We often speak of sleepers on these pages, but in truth none of the cars we typically cover are truly sleepers. Cars like the E28 M5, 500E and Audi S4 all sported bigger wheels, special badges and fatter exhaust. Often you see flared fenders, special lights and in most cases you can see the lowered stance hinting at a stiffened suspension. Inside are special and unique interiors with heavy bolsters, badges and enough electronic gizmos to make a Brookstone blush. Sure, they generally wear the same clothes as a German airport taxi, but honestly unless you’re blind not going to mistake them for anything picking you up outside Frankfurt Flughafen. But there are some serious sleepers available if you like discrete performance and complete anonymity. I’d argue that likely the best is this particular car – the BMW 320is:

7 CommentsWhile it’s not unusual to see the same car pop up more than once on these pages, usually we see new listings when over a year has passed. Yet the customized, Laguna Seca Blue supercharged 1992 Volkswagen Corrado SLC from last year is back with nearly the same listing and only a slight drop in price just over one year later with no claimed miles accrued. We also get effectively no updated photos and no interior shots. While it’s not to everyone’s taste, is $9,800 still too much for the amount of work that went in to this coupe?

A 1934 Mercedes-Benz W25 lines up to race in front of a several Bugattis looking decidedly more aerodynamic and modern.
It seems fitting that a day after the Formula 1 season commenced in Australia with a resounding sweep of the top spots by the Mercedes-Benz W06s of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. It was not particularly a surprise given the Mercedes-Benz domination of last year’s competition, yet it was a poignant reminder in light of the major difficulties faced by other successful racing manufacturers over the past few years with the new F1 regulations. While storied teams like McLaren, Ferrari and Red Bull have struggled to even finish at times, Mercedes-Benz has looked virtually unchallenged with wins only really contested between the two teammates. The same could be said of the original Silver Arrows between 1935 and 1939; however, in 1934 it was quite a different story when success was anything but a given:

Comments closedEarly in my track career, I became an instructor with the BMW Car Club. This afforded me many interesting experiences, one of which also happens to be one of my favorite track memories. One trip to Lime Rock Park was on a rainy Saturday; arriving, I found that one of my students had a Porsche 968. The car was well modified, running on sticky Michelin Pilot Sports and replete with a fully upgraded suspension, the 968 looked purposeful in Guards Red with BBS wheels and a 6-speed manual. Now, on paper the 968 was disappointing compared to the earlier Turbo models. Several times I’ve backed up this view because modified Turbos offer so much track performance. I’ve also spent some time in 944 Turbos around the same track – notably, my father’s ’89 Turbo, so I’m not without a point of reference. But this rainy day my student’s 968 was a blazing chariot against the bleak fog of the morning. Usually I get together and talk with my students before we head out about what their experience, expectations and trouble spots are. And this day, my student approached me and immediately said “I’m not heading out”. I figured this was because of the rain; in inclement conditions, the risk of an incident increases considerably, but so does the learning curve. It wasn’t fear of the conditions that was holding him back though; he had taken some medication and prudently didn’t feel as though his mental state was conducive to track time. “But you could drive me around” he said….
