The Unimog is one of my favorite go-anywheremobiles, and while this recent bout of Bay Area rain has people driving like kittens walking on ice, I realize the rest of the country has had a hell of a winter that makes driving truly treacherous. All of a sudden the guys who bought snow mogs and have endured the esnuing “crazy dude with a SnowMog” derisions are looking like prophets. Well, if next winter is like this one, here’s your chance to stay ahead of the curve. Recently restored, this beplowed Unimog 406 looks awesome in red with a badass bed basket and is getting a lot of attention, with 57 Watchers on the auction.

It’s been a long time since I’ve written up a Scirocco, but this red one is a great way to get back into it. The main thing the Scirocco gives up to the Audi Ur-Quattro for me is the amount of wheels driving; it wins for me in the looks department. Refreshingly stock and with less than 140k miles, this could be a great buy.

3 CommentsOur friends over at MotoringConBrio.com have impeccable taste in cars, as evidenced by their unique photo choices in the weekly “Assorted Grab Bag of Things We Like.” They have a way of reinforcing my car tastes, making me constantly say “Yes! Exactly! I didn’t think anyone else thought quite like that!” while often expanding my horizons, like thinking “Oh damn, you’re right: that French car IS hot.” Case in point; their current garage holds a Euro-bumpered E28 M5 and an E36 M3 sedan. If this isn’t your first time reading this blog, I need not explain more.
Well, apparently the time has come to focus the collection and the E36 didn’t make the cut. A hesitant seller means a lucky buyer, and whoever snags this E36 is among the latter. A clean daily driver with outstanding performance, it exemplifies this model’s aptitude for carving corners with a baby seat in the back. Well-priced with middling miles, MCB writes a description like someone who has read and critiqued a hell of a lot of car ads; succinct with all pertinent info and full honesty. This car won’t last long.

Comments closedOne of the things that initially intrigued me so much with VWs back in the day was the concept that Volkswagen Auto Group parts were much more like Lego than other makes; you could grab different pieces and improve and modify as you pleased. This Jetta takes that concept to 11, OEM+ing the heck out of 1992 Jetta GLI. With enough specific year-model-piece details to make your head spin (88 Jetta bumper, 92 GLI spoiler, Italian grill, 97 GTI shifterbox, etc…), it’s essentially a greatest hits of Volkswagen performance. Yet unlike a greatest hits set from auteurs like Pink Floyd or the Beatles, which remove the context which amplified the songs’ greatness, this GLI makes all the pieces work in harmony for a result greater than the sum of its parts. I’ve said before that the Mk2 GLI reminds me of a frugal E28 M5/535is, and this is no exception. Looks great all around, must go great with the VR6, and is all clearly chosen for specific gratification. If any Mk2 Jetta is going to pull $10k, it might as well be this one.

2 CommentsAs much as I think all the fancy AMG G55s and G63s I see around (not to mention the unobtanium G63 6-wheeler) are interesting thought exercises in mechanical dissonance, I’d much rather have a “real” G-wagen in my garage. Something like this 280GE would do just fine, as it spent much of its life with an off-road guiding company. Hell yes. It looks like the business on big BFGoodrich 33s with a winch and the perfectly-classic light blue. The interior looks nice enough for me, but there are some rust spots that may need attention. Or not, and you can keep driving this thing on and off-road like the badass it is, knowing that a few scuffs just add to its story.
