Double Take: 1973 and 1974 BMW Bavarias

Following on to the S-Class Double Take we featured earlier today, here’s another pair highlighting that car’s competition: the BMW E3, or New Six. After the success of the smaller New Class, BMW decided to try its hand at luxury vehicles once again. These larger sedans, powered by straight six engines, would be a decided departure from the luxury sedan formula, adding a dash of sport into the equation. Unique to the US market was the Bavaria, priced more in line with the 2500 model but with the larger engine of the 2800. Eventually the engine would increase in size to 3.0 liters in 1972 and the Bavaria would continue on, slotted beneath the 3.0S.

To start, we’ll take a look at this restored Bavaria for sale in Pennsylvania.

Double Take: Early Mercedes-Benz W116s

Even though it’s old enough to be considered a classic, the W116 Mercedes-Benz S –class seems to lack the following that its predecessor, the W108 or its successor, the W126, have garnered. Today, we’ll take a look at two W116s which appear similar on the surface, due to their golden huge, but are, in fact, rather different. First up is this 280S for sale in Germany equipped with a 4-speed manual gearbox, a combination we never saw here in the US market.

1990 Porsche 928GT

Since joining forces with the guys over at flüssig magazine, I’ve learned so much about the Porsche 928 and hopefully you, the reader, have as well. They are a fantastic resource for all things related to the front-engined, water-cooled sports cars from Stuttgart. One 928 which continues to intrigue me is this car we see here for sale in Texas: the 928GT. The GT was offered for only three years, from 1989 to 1991. This was essentially the more sporting of the 928 range, available only with a 5-speed manual gearbox and a bit more horsepower out of the 5.0 liter V8. If the GTS is getting a bit rich for your blood, it might be time to check out a 928 of this variety.

1997 Mercedes-Benz SL500 40th Anniversary

While values rise on the R107 Mercedes-Benz SLs, their successor, the R129, has stayed rather stagnant in the market. This isn’t all too surprising, as it is still riding borderline classic status. But as the years press on and the styling cues continue to evolve, the R129 will certainly establish its place as a desirable classic. This 1997 SL500 is one of the rare 40th Anniversary Editions, which featured six spoke Evo II alloy wheels, Crimson Metallic exterior over parchment leather and chestnut wood trim. With just under 40,000 miles on the clock, this is a good way to stand out from the rest of the R129 crowd.

2001 BMW Z3 Coupe

I feel kind of bad for the Z3 Coupe. The M Coupe of the same period has become a cult icon, but in the process, its sibling with less horsepower seems to be on the outside looking in. The Z3 Coupe, however, is a perfectly capable car in its own right. It might lack the Motorsport edge, but you can still get plenty of thrills out of this machine and have a decent amount of space in the back for that quick weekend getaway. Head still spinning from that expensive, low-mileage M Coupe we featured on our Facebook page yesterday? This Clownshoe is a little bit easier on the wallet.
