2006 MINI Cooper S GP

Quintessentially British, the MINI has BMWs fingerprints all over it and thus, is a welcome addition in the usual GCFSB roundup. Yours truly is an R53 Cooper S owner. For four years, the car has had very few issues and has been a pleasantly fun and trusty motoring sidekick. I’ve never grown tired of driving it and the power delivery by the supercharger makes this 1.6 liter feel a lot mightier than its displacement would suggest. At the end of the R53 run, MINI unleashed a special version, the Cooper S GP. Only 2,000 examples were produced, which featured no rear seats, reduced sound deadening, optional A/C and a few other weight savings measures. One color was available, Thunder Blue with a Pure Silver roof with the serial number on the roof and dashboard. This particular GP for sale in Virginia is a low production number and was brought to our attention from our reader Walker.

1993 Mercedes-Benz 300E with 63k miles

Say you have under $10,000 to spend on a car. Do you do the sensible thing and go with a nearly new compact or subcompact that, if you are lucky, may have some of its factory warranty left? Or do you do tempt fate and go with that older luxury vehicle you’ve always been craving? Fortunately, there’s a middle of the road example: the W124 Mercedes-Benz E class. Rock solid build quality, relatively affordable running costs in comparison to other German iron of the era and a healthy dose of leather, wood and other goodies to comfort passengers. This Smoke Silver example for sale in Indiana has just over 63,000 miles on the odometer, leaving it barely broken in.

1983 Porsche 944 with 52k miles

Not a day goes by that I don’t consider selling my 2006 MINI Cooper S for a clean, lower mileage Porsche 944. It probably wouldn’t be the wisest financial decision I ever made, but every time I see one of these coupes from the 1980s with their wide fenders, funky wheels and pop-up headlamps I get the urge to pull the trigger. This 1983 944 for sale in Massachusetts is equipped with the base 2.5 liter engine, 5-speed manual and has just over 50,000 miles on the clock. Is there honestly a better way to relive your 1980s automotive fantasies for under $10,000?

1986 Mercedes-Benz 240GD “Wolf”

For all the glitz and glamour of the current models, the Mercedes-Benz G class was originally intended for military consumption. However, much like the Hummer H1, the jet set took a liking to this vehicle and ran with it. Now we have AMG models of a rough and ready off-roader, answers to a question it seemed no one asked in the first place. If you want an honest, back to basics G-wagen, dial back to the 1980s, as there are a few bouncing around on these shores courtesy of the importer at the time, Santa Fe Motors in New Mexico. In addition, now that we’re at the point that most 1980s machinery is eligible for legal importation, interesting variants like this 1986 “Wolf,” built for defense operations in mind, have started to make their way across the pond. This one for sale in New Jersey is perfect for someone who wants to take the road less travelled off-road. Literally.

1975 Porsche 914 1.8

Rob is on holiday this week, so I’m going to take it upon me to throw a few Porsches out there in his absence. The 914 was the predecessor to the 924, itself another close collaboration between Volkswagen and Porsche. Offered in both four and six cylinder trim, this 1975 1.8 liter for sale in Florida represents the second to last year for this model, one which is often forgotten in the annals of Porsche history. Kermit the Frog said once “it ain’t easy bein’ green.” Perhaps the same is true on being a 914.
