Like most enthusiasts, I tend to prefer the smaller, air-cooled Porsche 911s of yesteryear. However, one recent 911 keeps vying for my attention, the 997 series 911 GT3RS. Specifically, when it is painted in Porsche Green, such as this early build car for sale in Rhode Island. With a series of lighter weight components, the GT3RS weighs in 44 pounds less than a standard 997 GT3. The RS would serve as a base for homologation that packed 300 bhp per ton. Just under 2,000 examples were produced, with 413 finding their way stateside.

No matter how tragic it might have been, almost everyone I speak to has a soft spot in their heart for their first car. And so it goes with me and my first ride, which, if I might admit, was far from tragic. That’s because it was a 1988 BMW 325is. Even though the E30 has become a bit cultish in recent years, I still smile when I see one on the street and remember the good times I had in mine. Many I come across these days are in dire need of TLC, but this 1986 325e for sale in California is a real minter. While the E30s equipped with the eta engine might not be the enthusiast’s choice, this one has the 5-speed manual so you’ll be able to make the most of what it’s got.

2 CommentsOscar Wilde once opined “I have the simplest tastes. I am always satisfied with the best.†Every time I lay eyes on a Mercedes-Benz S-class from the 1980s, those words come to mind. The W126 was sandwiched between two worlds of luxury cars. That of the W116 S-Class and it’s evolving safety and emissions equipment and the W140 S-class with its girth and over the top engineering. The W126 hits the sweet spot when it comes to executive sedans. It’s advanced without being overly complex, stylish without being trendy and comfortable without feeling like you are driving a sofa down the interstate. The short wheelbase 300SE was the “entry” level S-class towards the end of the production run, perfect for someone who wanted something just a tad smaller who didn’t need the oomph of a V8 engine. This example spotted by our reader Craig is for sale in New Jersey and belies the fact that it’s about to hit six figures on the odometer. It’s appearance looks almost fresh as new.

4 CommentsIt’s no coincidence that two of my favorite German performance cars emerged from the same factory. Both were blessed by the engineers at Porsche, even though neither of them wore the famous Stuttgart crest. One of these cars was the Audi RS2 Avant, which wasn’t sold on US shores. Shortly before production of this super estate commenced at Zuffenhausen, production was ending of another supercar in disguise, the Mercedes-Benz E500. Formerly known as the 500E before Mercedes’ nomenclature switchover in 1994, this sedan pushed the limits of what people thought was possible with a luxury sedan. I haven’t driven one in many years, but I can still remember slipping behind the wheel of this beast and being blown away. This 1994 E500 for sale in California represents the end of the production run for this special E-class. This one has covered a fair amount of miles but from the looks of it, could easily pass for half its age.

4 CommentsWe all have our favorite marque of choice here at GCFSB, and if one person is the resident Volkswagen/Audi fan, it’s Carter. He’s owned many of these cars over the years and knows them inside out. I’ve owned a few Volkswagens, but the Audi has always been that elusive car in my garage. One of the Audis I’ve admired over the years was a car from their dark days in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The C3 Avant. This 1990 200 Quattro Avant isn’t the much prized 20V model from the end of the production run, but with Quattro and a 5-speed manual, you could still have fun with this car.
