2014 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6X6

$_4 (1)

Sometimes a vehicle can be best summed up by numbers. There’s a few to remember with this truck, the Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6×6:

6: Number of wheels
37: Tire size in inches
20: Capacity in liters of the four air tanks that inflate aforementioned tires
18: Ground clearance in inches
7.8: 0-60 mph time
561: Number of torques the 5.5 liter twin-turbocharged V8 produces

And most importantly, 9,050. That would be the curb weight of this beast. If any truck was going to make the Lamborghini LM002 look rather pedestrian, this modified G-wagen would be it. From the land that gave us the V8 Supercars race series, those nutters down under were partly responsible for this creation we see before us. Designed for the Australian military, the G-Wagen 6×6 went into low volume production last year, continuing on for 2015. I was well aware of the existence of this 6×6, but didn’t know that any of them have made it over to the US. Amazingly, such a unique automobile has surfaced on Cars.com. Thanks to our reader Walker for passing along the tip!

2000 Mercedes-Benz C43 AMG Estate

$_4 (1)

I was always remorseful that Mercedes-Benz decided not to send it’s W202 C-class estate to the US market. This was a very handsome five-door that was a star amongst taxi drivers the world over. I still see a good number of these trolling the streets in various cities abroad, such was durability of this car. Even during a trip to Lisbon last year, there was a line of W202 diesel estates waiting outside of Portela International Airport. And yes, if speed was your thing, Mercedes-Benz offered an AMG version of this estate, just to make you long roof fans a bit more jealous of other automotive markets. This final year C43 AMG Estate for sale in Switzerland was brought to our attention from our reader Richard in Zurich. With just over 20,000 miles on the clock, this is a dream come true for those into the Youngtimer scene.

Motorsports Monday: 2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series

Let’s be honest; when thinking of tire shredding, redline rattling track weapons, Mercedes-Benz does not immediately come to mind. After all, Mercedes-Benz is more often associated with luxury – the type of luxury that petrol heads more or less immediately rip out of their track-bound cars. This is a bit strange, since on paper Mercedes-Benz is one of the most storied racing firms. Since their beginning, the company has been deeply entrenched in racing and is just off celebrating what many consider the crowning achievement of racing; a Formula 1 double championship with complete domination. But be it F1, Prototype racing, Touring cars and even the occasional rally, Mercedes-Benz has been there. When it comes to the road, though, they don’t seem to have many track-ready weapons. That is, of course, until the C63 AMG Black Series launched:

1988 Mercedes-Benz 560SEC

While I’m sold that it’s worthwhile in most cases to buy a top condition car from a careful one owner home with a spotless record and no miles on the clock, there’s something that’s at least romantic about the idea of restoring a lesser example back to driving quality. In the case of some older German metal, this is certainly possible; it’s not necessarily the least frustrating way to do things, but one can take a certain amount of pride in resurrecting a car from neglected status back to the road. Today’s example is a great case in point; a W126 Mercedes-Benz is a well build, solidly engineered thing of beauty. Add the pillar-less SEC coupe to the mix and the end of the run 5.6 V8 and it’s a great combination, only heightened by the right sprinkling of AMG and Euro bits. And with a low “Buy It Now” price, this 1988 has me dreaming of a winter project:

1978 Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9 Euro-Spec – REVISIT

The stellar looking two tone 1978 European specification Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9 with unique Ronal Racing 3 piece Turbos is back on eBay, this time with a “Buy It Now” of $30,000. That puts it about about a condition 2 price level by Hagerty’s valuation guide, which overall seems pretty appropriate. Appreciation of these big Benz models is growing and it’s expensive to repair one to properly sorted level. Period mods can go very wrong, but somehow I really love the look of this car – it may be the coolest 6.9 I’ve ever seen. What do you think?
