After several relistings since I initially wrote it up back in May, this 350SLC is back up on the auction block. There was an claim that some of the 350SLC cars came badged as 450SLCs, making this car appear original, though I can’t find any proof of that – does anyone know better? Miles are very low, condition appears good and this would certainly be a fun package that would last – but the asking price is fairly steep at $19,000. What do you think this car is worth?
Most of the Unimogs we write up are from the 60s and 70s due to ease of import and cost. They’re still capable but have interiors like the old Willys Jeep we used to have as an island bruiser. Fond memories of bouncing around and sore elbows indeed! Today’s Mog has come a little ways inside and looks similar to all the other drab-green examples we’ve seen, but a slightly modernized grill hints at much newer running gear. Unfortunately, the cost for this newer 90s model is not just higher monetarily, but also brings the inability to register it for the road in the US. Canadians can rejoice or Americans can plan on having it as a badass farm vehicle, but part of the allure of the Mog for me would be to see the terrified looks on passing motorists’ faces as I towered above them. Alas, the price demands this Unimog be seen as a useful truck as opposed to an awesome toy.
The awesome looking 4-speed 280SE from 1977 that I wrote up in late July has reappeared on the marketplace, having not sold the first time around. This car appears to be really unique and well presented and would certainly turn heads at any show. I especially love the AMG-spec wheels and Euro-goodies that slim down and beef up the S-Class just a bit. At $12,000, this seems like a good deal for a great vintage Benz:
The Type 300 was the top of the range for Mercedes-Benz in the 1950s, a symbol of what this company was capable of but few were able to afford in the years immediately after World War II. One of the most impressive models was the four-door cabriolet version, known to some as the “Adenauer.†This was due to the fact that it was the ride of choice for the first Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Konrad Adenauer. Towards the end of the production run, the 300d was revealed, sporting a detuned version of the fuel-injected inline-6 found in the 300SL sports car. This was a car for the rich and famous, a car that was on par with what Rolls Royce had to offer in its day. It would eventually be succeeded by the 600 Grosser Mercedes, which would carry the torch of the über Benz into the 1980s. This 300d is one of 65 ever produced and is currently on offer in Ohio.
We’ve talked before about how pre-merger AMG cars are a bit of a mixed bag; some are well-documented, fully built cars while others claim heritage without being able to back it up, seeming rather to just be a collection of parts. In the 1980s, there were a glut of aftermarket firms chopping the tops off of just about every luxury coupe you could imagine, and the SEC Mercedes was one of the popular ones as a base. Here’s one such car; a black with black leather 500SEC with AMG wheels and body kit. It’s claimed to be one of ten produced by AMG, but outside of the wheels and kit there doesn’t appear to be any other AMG pieces here – which is a bit odd. There’s also no documentation of the history shown despite the high asking price. Even stranger, this car appears on several sites – most recently Mecum Auctions, where it is recorded as being sold in the August 14-16 auction – but it also appears on another site much dirtier and with a period AMG badge on the right side of the trunk. Still, it’s an impressive looking car:
