We’ve had a brief reprieve from the hot and humid days of summer here in the Mid-Atlantic and what better way to enjoy the sun and wind than with some open-top motoring. A Targa provides an interesting alternative for drivers who don’t care for the full convertible experience and while I’ve always been a little ambivalent towards them in general this all-black example strikes the perfect look and nearly changes my whole perspective. Here we have a Black on Black 1986 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa, located in Alabama, with 139,500 miles on it. The ’86 model year was the last year the 911 made use of the 915 transmission before Porsche switched to the G50 so these tend to command slightly lower values than the cars produced from ’87-’89.

Alright, it’s time to go shopping in the bargain-Porsche aisle. In a world where poor-condition 911s can command five-figure price tags and pristine examples well into the six figures, the 944 remains the everyman’s Porsche. Sure, one will never be as exciting as a 911 Turbo, but the combination of a manual transmission and rear-wheel drive always provides a recipe for fun. So, if you’re looking to get into a Porsche for the first time, or perhaps you just want a good car for track days without having to worry about writing it off, then an entry-level 944 makes a great option. The example featured here is a 1987 Porsche 944 Coupe, located in Texas, that looks fantastic in its Burgundy paint.

3 CommentsThe 930 has always possessed its own ’80s flare that few other cars can eclipse. Make that 930 a Cabriolet, cloak it in metallic paint and give it a nearly white interior and now we’re really talking ’80s. Lately we haven’t seen nearly as many 930 Cabriolets come up for sale relative to the Coupe so when we do come across one it always grabs our attention. The case is no different with this eye-catching Platinum Metallic 1983 Porsche 930 Cabriolet, located in Colorado, with Parchment leather interior and 87,898 miles. Like a few of the recent 930s we’ve featured here at GCFSB this one is a RoW 930 as the 930 was unavailable in the US market during this time.

2 CommentsFor years there was continuing rumors that Porsche would finally produce a four-door saloon, but it wasn’t until 2009 that the Panamera would appear on the scene. No matter how good of a drive the Porsche Panamera is, I just can’t get by the aesthetics. It’s certainly not the ugliest car ever produced, but it just has an awkward presence that puts its grand touring predecessor, the 928, in a good light. Futuristic for its time, the car has aged gracefully and late model examples such as this 928GTS have begun to appreciate considerably. This 928GTS for sale in Ontario, Canada has a reasonable 66,000 miles on the clock and the more common 4-speed automatic gearbox.

3 CommentsI suppose it’s beating a dead horse just a bit, but it’s astounding what a good deal the overlooked 944 Turbo is these days. You can get a very clean early 86 944 Turbo for around $10,000 – significantly less than what an equivilant E30 M3, Quattro or 190E 16V will cost you. Performance from the turbocharged inline-4 will surprise the other three legends, too. Even in early 220 horsepower specification, the 944 Turbo will easily out accelerate, out turn and out brake the other three. The most aerodynamic of the three, it will also return the best fuel economy on a long trip. The only downside is that, unlike the others, the rear seats are mostly useless to anyone who has legs; but they’re there in a pinch, and the versatility of the hatch in part makes up for some of the downside. But for Porsche, it wasn’t quite enough to have a car capable of besting its contemporaries, so in 1988 Porsche upped the ante with the “S”; an additional 30 horsepower, trick M030 Koni suspension, limited slip differential and forged Fuchs wheels led the list of changes that were carried over into 1989:
