Turn the clock back one year and nearly every classic 911 we featured seemed caught up in a whirlwind of ever-escalating value. Cars that had long been the standard for value-conscious buyers were now being snapped up almost immediately once they were put up for sale. It was clearly a seller’s market for cars that probably had been undervalued for a long time and we were seeing the market correct itself. Much of this craze affected the 3.2 Carrera, but values of its predecessor, the 911SC, also increased quite a bit, especially for excellent low-mileage examples. Sitting here now, the market has stabilized for all but the absolute best cars, which gives those searching for a good driver-quality example reasonable benchmarks for evaluating their options. Prices are higher than they once were, but at least in relative terms the 911SC still represents a nice value for those looking to own a classic 911. Amid all of the high-dollar collectible Porsches there still exist plenty of options, though they dwindle with each passing year, for those seeking to find a reasonable value. Many of these value machines also benefit from sharing a market with those collectibles and with care they can be resold at a later date for sometimes more than their current purchase price. The key is to find cars that have been well cared for throughout their life. The 911 especially has had a lengthy history of stout engines so a car’s mileage is important, but its care is paramount. The 911SC fits most of these parameters perfectly: the engine has a history of long life and collectors haven’t taken as much notice outside of the best examples on the market. For fans of the Targa, value is even easier to find since the Targa has almost always been the lowest regarded of the models. I am a fan of the Targa so I always enjoy coming across these sorts of examples: here we have a India Red 1982 Porsche 911SC Targa, located in Massachusetts, with a Chocolate Brown interior and 110,772 miles on it.

1 CommentThe 911SC used to be the go-to 911 for those seeing a low cost of entry and a modicum of reliability with the 911 game. However, the market for early and late air-cooled 911s is pushing the values up for the Super Carrera and in comparison to other models, they are a relative bargain and a good starting point for the beginner 911 owner. One of the more recent 911s I’ve driven was a 911SC Targa, like the Euro market example we see here for sale in Pennsylvania. It was during the production run of the SC that the 911s fate would be decided. Peter Schutz, CEO at the time, would see to it that this iconic sports car would live on.

3 CommentsUp until a couple of years ago I could not have cared less about any Porsche that wasn’t a 993. The older models were nothing but slow, featureless tin cans that were driven by orthodontists and euro snobs. Then, almost overnight I became fascinated with the 964, Carrera 3.2 and 911 SC. I dove into Pelican Parts with reckless abandon, started reading blogs dedicated to each generation and more importantly I learned what made one model’s driving experience different from another. I was hooked on classic 911’s and if I had only listened to my gut I would be the proud owner of an ’88 3.2 Carrera for what would now be considered an obscenely low price, it’s too painful to say anything further on the subject.
As with many new fans of these classic cars, I quickly learned that the SC is widely regarded as the best candidate for a person’s first 911. It’s not dangerously fast, it’s relatively easy to work on provided you’re somewhat mechanically inclined and there is a wealth of information out there to help you learn its quirks. It was (and to some degree still is) the most affordable way to achieve classic 911 motoring bliss but as this advert shows, affordable is a relative term. The big pluses here are that this car has lived its entire life in California, its only traveled 80,000 miles in the last 14 years and the color combination is one of my favorites. The tan leather with brown leather dash and door accents fit perfectly inside the Light Blue Metallic (L30T) shell. Within the last year the owner has replaced the alternator, fuel pump and sunroof cables, which all areas of concern with these cars. He fitted the rather clean Fuchs wheels with decent Dunlop rubber about 6 months ago and replaced all the shocks with OEM ones about 3 years ago. Additionally the car has been equipped with keyless entry, which is nice feature for those of us with thick thighs and an affinity for pants of the more fitted variety.

It won’t necessarily pique the interest of the collectors, nor will it attract crazy values, but it is definitely the sort of car we’re interested in around here. This 1982 Porsche 911SC, located in Portland, Oregon, has traveled more than 256,000 miles. If there were doubts about the potential longevity of these cars – and generally those doubts are minimal – a 911 like this shows the possibilities available to owners who make a point of maintaining their car properly. It is either a one- or two-owner car, the ad is slightly unclear on this, and while it isn’t entirely original I’m not sure that’s really what this car is about. Here we have car that has been driven, enjoyed, and cared for throughout its life and which has a history.
