1986 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa

We have featured a few 3.2 Carreras for sale lately as the market for these cars rises and owners look to capitalize on interest in the car. Here we have another example that will provide us with an interesting look at where Carreras in various states of condition and mileage are selling. Given some of the sales we’ve seen, this particular Carrera might even be a pretty good value. This Guards Red 1986 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa, for sale in California, comes in the rare combination of red on red and sits at just shy of 80K miles. We’ve seen in the past few weeks this 1989 Carrera Coupe with 57K miles sell for $45,000 and this 1986 Carrera Coupe with 162K miles recently sold for $27,000. So, where might Targa values lie relative to these coupes?

Eighties Flagships: Two clean 1986 Mercedes-Benz 560SELs

No matter how many successive generations of S classes pass us by, I always look back to the W126 as the gold standard of executive transport. The W116 of the 1970s was a thoroughly capable car if a bit unloved. The W140 that succeeded the W126 was a technological tour de force but was a bit brutish in terms of its size and complexity. The W220 that came after that was derided as a bit unreliable during the dark days of Mercedes-Benz products in the early part of the 21st century. The last and current generations of S classes have moved the luxury sedan game very much forward, but the technology is a bit over the top for me, which has me going back to the W126 for simpler, albeit capable performance and motoring pleasure.

The two following 560SELs represent the flagship of the lineup for the period between 1986 and 1991. The first one we will look at is a very low mileage example for sale in Arizona in a classic combination of black over parchment leather.

1986 Porsche 911 Carrera

Here is our counter to yesterday’s low mileage no reserve Carrera: a 1986 Grand Prix White Porsche 911 Carrera, located in California, which has seen 162,000 miles. We’ve seen the rapid escalation of the air-cooled 911 market, but my interest here is on the effect that rise has had on higher mileage, less pristine vehicles. Can those still be had a reasonable value or have they too shot through the roof?

1986 Porsche 911 Turbo

1986: For most it may have been just like any other year, but for Porsche fans it was special because it was in that year that the 911 Turbo returned to our shores after an absence of six years (it was also the first year of 959 sales, but that’s a topic for a separate post). Beginning in 1980, Porsche pulled its flagship 911 from the American market because of emissions regulations and their plan for the 928 to succeed the 911 as the marque’s premiere car. Once it became clear that the 911 would, in fact, remain supreme, the necessary money was allocated to produce a turbocharged engine that would meet our emissions standards and the 930 was back! While it was slightly down on power relative to its European counterpart, it still remained more than capable of wagging its tail. The car we have featured here comes to us from that first year of return: a 1986 Meteor Gray Porsche 911 Turbo, located in New York, with Bordeaux leather interior and 77,675 miles.

1986 Volkswagen Transporter DoKa Syncro

$_57

I wrote up a cool-but-quaint light blue Syncro Doka last week, and while they are very cool and unique cars, it wasn’t quite the look I’d go for in a Vanagon Truck. Today’s Doka wears the same Vanagon Carat Cafe wheels that I took issue with on the Baby Blue, but brings a badass orange-and-black paint scheme to liven things up. It also has the Bostig Ford Zetec shared with another Vanagon I wrote up recently, making it a tasty proposition indeed. The reserve is probably considerable, but bidding started pretty low, giving hope that this could be a great chance at a rare and awesome truck.
