I suppose it’s beating a dead horse just a bit, but it’s astounding what a good deal the overlooked 944 Turbo is these days. You can get a very clean early 86 944 Turbo for around $10,000 – significantly less than what an equivilant E30 M3, Quattro or 190E 16V will cost you. Performance from the turbocharged inline-4 will surprise the other three legends, too. Even in early 220 horsepower specification, the 944 Turbo will easily out accelerate, out turn and out brake the other three. The most aerodynamic of the three, it will also return the best fuel economy on a long trip. The only downside is that, unlike the others, the rear seats are mostly useless to anyone who has legs; but they’re there in a pinch, and the versatility of the hatch in part makes up for some of the downside. But for Porsche, it wasn’t quite enough to have a car capable of besting its contemporaries, so in 1988 Porsche upped the ante with the “S”; an additional 30 horsepower, trick M030 Koni suspension, limited slip differential and forged Fuchs wheels led the list of changes that were carried over into 1989:

5 CommentsI tend to go back and forth about whether I prefer the look of the 3.2 Carrera Speedster or that of the 964-based Carrera 2 Speedster, but there is something about the particular car featured here that really catches my eye in ways that others have not. Either Speedster is, of course, intended to harken back to the original 356 Speedster and to a degree the narrow-bodied Carrera 2 seems to come closer to the mark in that regard. There were a small number of narrow-bodied 3.2 Carrera Speedsters made, but they are so few that I can’t recall coming across one. Getting to the car here, as the market for the 3.2 Carrera has intensified I’ve been curious about the effect that would have on the rare variants of these models. The Speedster has always been very expensive so we may wonder how much more value they may show in the near term, but if this seller can even approach this asking price, then it would appear that the Speedster market has increased quite a bit as well. Here we have a gorgeous Grand Prix White 1989 Porsche 911 Speedster with red leather interior, located in Monterey, showing 22,300 miles.

4 CommentsWe’ve seen before many times that the devil is in the details with the pre-merger AMG modified cars. Like Faberge eggs, they can look the part without actually being a real AMG modified car; but unlike the Faberge art the details of all of the early cars is not particularly well known or documented. So here is a fairly desirable, very clean W124 300CE – already a sought after car, especially with lower miles. Tack on the awesome looking AMG bits and you have one really great looking, desirable package. Despite this, it’s not likely authentic. There’s a line that it was factory equipped with the AMG body kit and sport suspension, and indeed if you scroll through the pictures there are the AMG-spec springs. Outside the AMG-spec body kit is one of the best looking available and really sharpens the lines of the W124 into a more aggressive stance. But is it a real AMG?

Idyllic settings are what make open-top motoring so appealing. With the top down even a hot summer day feels a lot cooler as you watch the scenery rush by and enjoy the ocean air. This Baltic Blue 1989 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet, located in Tampa, Florida, comes in with 63,621 miles. While the 3.2 Carrera is no longer the bargain it once was, many of the examples outside of the rare 20K-mileage-and-less range have yet to appreciate to quite the same degree. However, those days are surely numbered so anyone who had hopes of owning one of the last classic 911s will need to act soon.
