2021 Porsche 718 Spyder

Introverts need not apply! This is a 2021 Porsche 718 Spyder finished in Python Green. Don’t get your snakes mixed up, as this is a slightly different shade than the always favorite Viper Green. Believe it or not, this is a not a $12,830 paint-to-sample color, but rather just a “special color” for $2,580. That’s a bargin if you think about it. It is a tough color to pull off, but if being flashy and noticeable is what you want, tough to go wrong here. The problem is, it seems like this specific car is priced like the paint has little flakes of gold embedded in it.

2020 Mercedes-AMG E63 S

Ever since the early 1990s, Mercedes-Benz has produced an E-Class that can punch above its weight class. Cool to think about in the grand scheme of things seeing as it is capable as a seven-day a week daily driver, but also a supercar in disguise that can get you to 60 mph in the low three second range. Add in a really nice interior and industry-standard tech like some automatous driving aids, and it is tough to argue against. That is no different with the current generation W213 and it sure seems like that won’t be changing, even with sedans fading away and SUV-type vehicles being the choice of the masses.

Today, I have a 2020 E63 S up for sale in Chicago that you might of noticed is not in the typical black/silver/grey/white. This is actually China Blue and was special order as part of Mercedes’ Designo Manufaktur program that will let you put a custom color for $7,500. This was previously limited to just the G-Glass, but now is available on the E-Class, S-Class, and AMG GT. Mercedes must have been jealous of all the Paint to Sample cars running around across town and decided they would too like to make a bunch of money from owners who need to be different.

2021 Audi RS6 Avant

Friends, the great experiment is finally underway. For generations, US fans have lamented Audi’s all-out refusal to bring its fastest wagons to the US market since 1991. Starting with the first generation S4 Avant and S6 Plus with their thundering (and optional) V8s, through the RS2, RS4, and RS6s, Audi has seemed convinced that it would not be able to sell the top-tier fast wagons here. They’re not alone; BMW has also robbed US enthusiasts of the best wagon offerings as we’ve seen, yet Mercedes-Benz has managed to eek out a market here over the past decade and change and has become the defacto boss of fast five doors, minus an occasional Cadillac interloper.

A few weeks ago, though, I saw the first shipment of fully-wrapped RS6s arrive at the port next to my home. Audi’s no longer playing around, and the full-fat 4.0T cranking out 561 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. Coupled with a hybrid assistance motor and an eight-speed automatic transmission, it’s no surprise the numbers are staggering. 0-60 is a hair over 3 seconds, and it’ll bury the needle close to 200 mph if deregulated. This isn’t a supercar; this is a five-passenger wagon that weighs in just over 5,000 lbs – with nothing in it! Also staggering? The tech, with touchscreens, virtual cockpit, and torque-vectoring. The tires, measuring 285/30 and 22″ in diameter. The brakes, which are 16.5″ in front and ‘only’ 14.6″ out back. And, the price. Last I heard there was already a wait for these cars, and that’s despite the monster pricetag starting at $110,000. Lucky for you, you don’t have to wait…as long as you’re willing to pay:

2020 Audi R8 V10 Performance Decennium Edition

The ‘what’ edition?

Don’t worry, that was my reaction too. It’s not that I don’t know the Latin origin of 10…heck, we’re only two weeks away from the month that begins with it (sidebar: Thanks for screwing up the straightforward month numbering system, Julius Caesar, though the weather in his and his adopted son’s months is much nicer). Anyway, here’s the R8.

The 2020 R8 V10 Performance Decennium Edition is ostensibly to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Audi’s V10, which…premiered in 2009 here. So that’s eleven years (or twelve, if you count this year). So…what’s the rub? Well, in the US Audi just skipped the 2019 model year. As the performance of the V10…Performance…was already pretty sharp, the Decennium Edition didn’t add any extra power, so as not to step on Lamborhini’s parade and become a named storm. Instead, it’s a roughly $20,000 visual package that was added on top of your already quite expensive R8 if you ticked the box, and it was limited to just 50 cars in the US. So let’s see what you got:

2020 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Sports Cup Edition

Usually when manufacturers start pumping out ‘special editions’ it is either at the beginning of the generation or knocking on death’s door as a last grasp to get people to buy the aging model before retooling for the next model. Today, we have the former. This Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 is already a huge hit for Porsche fans as everyone guessed, and the European-market already has a ‘special edition’ to go with it. What is it? The Sports Cup Edition. You might be looking at that photo and thinking it is a track-focused model with a bunch of lightweight parts and more hardcore suspension. That would make total sense, right? Nope. Just some stickers.

2020 Porsche 718 Spyder

I think sometimes I take for granted the freedom Porsche gives us on configuring cars. When it comes down to it, they’ll basically give you anything you want for the right price, and then even more if they really like you. In the modern era of lean manufacturing and just-in-time production, doing one-off builds for customers probably doesn’t make sense on paper. Yet if someone wants “Kills bugs fast.” on a door sill, they’ll do it. It gets even more complicated and time consuming when it comes to interiors with order special leathers then having someone hand-stitch the turn signal stocks. The ROI has to be enormous for Porsche both in profit and customer loyalty to continue this practice in 2020.

However, it is one thing to do it when customers are paying extra for it, and another when doing it on dealer stock cars. This 2020 718 Spyder on a dealer lot in California has a wild Bordeaux Red and black interior that is mirrors the interior of the previous Boxster Spyder nearly 10 years ago. Truth be told, this color combo isn’t for everyone.

2020 Mercedes-AMG GT R Pro

Just when you thought the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT R couldn’t get any bonkers, AMG turned it up to 11. Just to be clear here, the standard GT R, as if there is anything “standard” about it, was a car so bonkers and track focused that it held the Nürburgring production car lap record for a short time. So what did it need? More stuff! All that stuff seemed to pay off, as somehow they shaved another six seconds off that lap time without adding any more power at all. How is that possible? Lighter, stiffer, and more aero. That is what this boils down to. Production is limited to just 750 examples, and one happened to pop up in Florida with an impressive 5,000 miles on the odometer.

2020 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4

Everyone wants options. Not the options in terms of life, I’m talking about optional equipment for cars. “Fully loaded!” “Every option!” I’m sure you’ve seen those phrases throw around a million times when looking at cars when the reality of it is it’s configured like the majority of them for sale. Naturally, Porsche takes this to another level by offering a boat load of options that you didn’t even know were possible and then ever went a step further by offering their special customers whatever they wanted, as long as they paid an eye-watering amount of money.

But what if you ordered a car with no options? Crazy. Who would go into a Porsche dealer and specifically order a car with nothing? Just standard equipment and that’s it. Well, that seems to be what happened with this new 718 Cayman GT4.

2020 Porsche 718 Spyder

With the launch of the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4, we were also offered a topless version with the 718 Spyder. We’ve seen the Boxster Spyder before, but never like this. This Spyder was developed under the guidance of Porsche GT boss Andy Preuninger from the GT department, thus making it a real “GT car,” just not badged as such. It literally is just a Spyder version of the 718 GT4 with the same suspension, engine, and tuning, just with the little folding top similar to that of the GT3-based 991.2 Speedster. So if you want a GT4, but also want the open-air feeling, here you go.

2020 Mercedes-Benz G550

We are over a year into the all-new Mercedes-Benz G-Class and to the surprise of no one, they literally can’t make enough of them to meet demand. It makes sense, as the G-Class is used as a form of currency in the state of California, both monetarily and socially, and they don’t ride like old farm trucks anymore. So as soon as a new one hits the lot, it is usually snagged up within a day or two. That I expected. What I didn’t expect is now that we are well over a year in, prices are still as crazy as ever.
