Even though there are always certain cars we feature frequently and always have an eye out for here at GCFSB, we still come across examples that can stun us for a variety of reasons. Such is the case here with a rarely seen Silver 1989 Porsche 911 Carrera Speedster with a fantastic Velvet Red interior and only 29,032 miles on it. This is a UK Speedster so it is one of only 139 right-hand drive 911 Speedsters produced, adding an extra touch of rarity to an already special car. The 911 Speedster, of course, was Porsche’s homage to the original 356 Speedster, a stripped-down, no frills, two-seater, intended for enthusiasts who desired a weekend racer, but without going to a full-on track car. The lower windscreen was removable and the folding top wasn’t really intended for use while driving. While those sporting intentions probably never manifested to a significant degree in Porsche’s remakes of the Speedster the basic design elements and stylistic cues were still present. Even today the Speedster remains a testament to Porsche’s history and one of the most loved designs the marque has produced.

It feels like it has been a while since I’ve written about a 911 Speedster, but as prices for these models have steadily increased I’ve become even more torn about these models. I understand why prices for the Speedster have skyrocketed; they are relatively rare and reach back to Porsche’s earliest history. Still, I can’t help but feel that as these become ever more exclusive, ultimately they are destined to rarely, if ever, see the light of day, and never truly fulfill the basic goals of the original 356 Speedster to which they harken. C’est la vie. The 964 Speedster is my preferred variant over its slightly younger sibling the 3.2 Carrera-based 911 Speedster, and they also tend to sell for a little less money. Granted, those monetary differences can be small and the 964 Speedster appears to have quickly caught up within the current market. Here we have an example from the final year an air-cooled Speedster was produced (unless your name is Jerry Seinfeld and Porsche built you a 993 Speedster): a Black on Black 1994 Porsche 911 Speedster, located in San Jose, with 19,342 miles on it.

Comments closedAs the market for an air-cooled 911 continues to propel itself along the number of rare 1980’s variants we see coming up for sale appears to be increasing as well. Recently, we’ve seen a fairly large number of Slantnose 930s for sale and while there have been fewer we have also come across a number of Speedsters. There is a certain irony to all of this given that in most regards the 911SC and 3.2 Carrera of the ’80s represent some of the best values in the 911 line. The Slantnose and the Speedster, however, do not as most will easily sell for six figures. Here we have a Guards Red 1989 Porsche 911 Speedster with Black interior located in New York.

3 CommentsThe Speedster is one of those iconic Porsches held in consistently high regard by many fans of the marque and which Porsche has released periodically as a means to celebrate its history and to provide its buyers with a chance at experiencing that history. While the original Speedster was intended as a budget weekend-racer, subsequent versions have tended to come at a premium relative to its standard counterparts. For the 1994 release, Porsche based the Speedster off of the 964 body and even offered a clubsport version to further solidify the relationship the car shared with the original 356. With less than 1000 total 964 Speedsters built, and almost half of those coming to the US, these remain pretty rare cars and tend to be bought up by collectors. The example featured here is a 1994 Porsche 911 Speedster in Guards Red over Black. With less than 6K miles on the clock this Speedster presents in nearly like-new condition both inside and out; the seats hardly look like they’ve been sat in!
To me, the 964 Speedster is a more aesthetically pleasing version relative to the 1989 Speedster, which derived its looks largely from the 930. The curves of the 964 body simply fit the lines of the Speedster very well and offer an appearance that is more akin to that of the 356.
