I have been enjoying my jaunt through the world of classic 911s looking at examples of the 911SC and 3.2 Carrera. We’ve seen a few nice, and reasonably priced, Targas, a couple very nice Coupes, and a very pretty Carrera Cabriolet. That last model will take our focus in this post as we look at examples from both the beginning and end of the 3.2 Carrera’s model run. 1983, the last year of 911SC production, was the first year Porsche produced a 911 Cabriolet and since there was only one year for those models, it is to the 3.2 Carrera that we typically must turn when looking for the combination of a fully-open cockpit with that classic 911 design. I wouldn’t classify the two we see here as especially rare colors since each is more a subtle variant of a common color, but the color combinations are not ones that we come across very frequently. Those combinations definitely bring with them an extra level of scarcity with these. We will begin with the example from the first year of 3.2 Carrera production, a Slate Blue Metallic 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet located in California with Grey Beige leather interior and 48,133 miles on it.

Here’s one for the historians and collectors: a 1966 Porsche 911 Prototype, fitted with a variety of racing components and features from the 911R, that served duty from 1966-1968 before being retired as Porsche transitioned to a longer wheelbase. It is believed to be the first 911 to feature rear fender flares as it was the 911 that served as the testing bed specifically for those flares, which we would then see on the 911R. The ad gives us a few other details of the car’s components, which include a 2.0 liter flat-six from 1968. The documentation provided is scant and nothing I’ve been able to find tells us what became of this 911 during the years from 1968 after it was retired as a prototype up to the 2000s when it was discovered and revived. Given its appearance at the exclusive Amelia Island Concours – a point we can verify – there are at least a few folks that feel pretty certain of its identity. I’m not sure who discovered it, but that must have been one heck of a barn find.

2 CommentsPorsche’s pastel blues are some of my favorite of any manufacturer. They are almost beyond vibrant and provide a sense of life to any 911 that takes the dynamic capabilities of the machine and expands through color. Cars stimulate all of the senses other than taste and a heightening our visual sense of any car is bound to either repel some or completely intoxicate others. Most any pastel color will do that – I really don’t think there’s a middle-ground with these colors – and my favorites are blue and orange, both of which Porsche does well. We see them very rarely and this is one of the few non-GT 997s I’ve come across in such a color. The seller has stated that this is Pure Speedster Blue, which is not a color I’ve heard of but since it’s stated to be paint-to-sample that isn’t uncommon. Regardless, it’s along the lines of Mexico Blue and Riviera Blue, two shades that were offered in very limited runs in the ’70s and ’90s respectively. I love them and on this 2006 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S you get modern refinement and mechanicals, but with a vintage color.

4 CommentsThe Turquoise Green Metallic 1996 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe with contrasting Marble Grey and Midnight Blue interior, which we featured last May, is back up for sale. Since it has now moved on to a different seller I thought perhaps we’d check back in on this very pretty 993. The original seller stated that this color combination was special ordered through Porsche Exclusive, but there’s no sign of that in the present ad. Whether it was special ordered or not, it remains a wonderful color and a unique find among the last of the air-cooled 911s.

3 CommentsIn my continued efforts to keep an eye on the market for the 3.2 Carrera I present another low-mileage example that appears in exceptional condition. But, if I’m totally truthful, this one is more than that for me and my choice of it to feature isn’t just because it’s a potentially high-dollar Carrera. The 911 we see here is a Black 1985 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe, located in Los Angeles, with Tan interior and 22,900 miles on it. It is outfitted pretty much exactly as I would have chosen. Black and Tan isn’t necessarily an exciting combination and both the black exterior and tan interior will have their detractors. But it’s my favorite combination for a car I plan to spend time driving. There are more exciting colors I’d love to have in the garage, but those are to look at. Add in the black Fuchs, sport seats, and the whale tail (with complementary front spoiler) and this is precisely what I would be looking for in a Carrera Coupe. As we’ll discuss below it’s priced well above what I’d desire from a 911 I wanted to drive, but in all other regards I absolutely love it!
