We feature various editions of the 3.2 Carrera here at GCFSB, but rarely do the cars we come across have low mileage. Even the car featured here, a 1986 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa has almost 45K miles, but for these cars that represents a decently low mileage car. The fact is that most of these cars have already eclipsed six-figure mileage because they have been driven. And why wouldn’t they be? The 3.2 Carrera is a fantastic driver’s car and for the most part prices remain within reach of a large number of buyers (at least relative to the rest of the 911 line) and so they are less likely to be locked away in a comfortable garage. The Targa tends to fit the bill even more as they are less loved than both their hard- and soft-top counterparts. The car here comes in the ever popular combination of Guards Red over Black.

In order to satisfy the desires of Porsche enthusiasts seeking something a bit more hardcore than a standard 964 Carrera 2, in 1993 Porsche released the RS America, a limited run lightened model that came without such features as power steering, A/C, and even a radio, but included a whale tail and sport suspension. A radio, sunroof, limited-slip differential, and A/C could be optioned onto the car, but it still came in at a lower weight than a standard Carrera 2. While the RS America remains a far cry from the much more potent and lighter 964 RS available in Europe, it still provided modest gains in an effort to improve driving dynamics for those buyers seeking such things. These cars remain relatively rare but do pop-up from time to time for sale and here we have a 1994 Midnight Blue Porsche 911 RS America located in California. This one is fully optioned and has seen 112,500 miles.

6 CommentsThe 1978 Porsche 911 Race Car we featured in October is back up for sale. It is now listed as a 1979 911 rather than as a 1978, but I’m not sure that will alter our thoughts on this car in any significant way. This car failed to sell during its original listing and has now been put up for Reserve Auction with a Buy It Now of $33,500.

1 CommentA little over a month ago, I wrote up one of the last air-cooled Porsche race cars to roll out of the factory – the mighty 993 RSR 3.8. Despite being a factory race car with lots of history, it didn’t manage to sell on Race-Cars.com and now has popped up on Ebay. I mentioned in the write up that you could replicate this car for much less than the asking price, though the value was in the factory build and the history. That value has gotten slightly worse since not selling, because the owner has raised the opening bid $30,000 to $295,000. It’s a strange tactic to take when your car doesn’t sell, but despite that the car is still really neat to peek at!

Comments closedThe other day I had dinner with my 1996 Turbo-owning neighbor and discussed his purchasing process, which began with an attraction to the wide hips of the C4S and led him to the ever-increasing draw of the final air-cooled Turbo. Many see it as the ultimate iteration of the unstoppable, quintessential sports car, and pristine examples are commanding serious money. The only difference between my neighbor’s and this one are the wheels and interior, and the brushed turbo twists and deep magenta interior are quite attractive under the black exterior. With fewer than 30k miles, this is the holy grail for many P-car enthusiasts.
