Inexpensive Vanagon Campers

$_57 (6)
The fact that many camping Vanagons are going for $40k and up can be daunting for those of us who have aspirations of living the van life. Today we’ll take a look at a couple of 1991 vans that severely undercut the general Vanagon camper market – one pop-top and one rare example that has all the camping accoutrements but no pop-top.

1979 Mercedes-Benz Unimog Camper

$_57

I dream of owning a Unimog camper, but most of the time the barren, ex-military examples available require a lot of imagination to create one that could actually be lived in. Not so today, as this owner has created one of the most complete Unimog RVs I’ve ever seen, fully ready to climb mountains, ford streams, and escape the zombie apocalypse. If any vehicle could single-handedly circumnavigate the globe, it would be this one. The fast axles make it appropriate for highway use while the insulation means traveling at those speeds won’t destroy your ears. The generator and roof tent show that you mean business, while the living area could serve as an attractive $2k/month studio in San Francisco. It even has an insulated dog house!!! There are quite a few 4×4 Sportvans that serve as mobile apartments in SF – this would be a great choice to do the same and would give you the option to change locales should you become suddenly interested in Patagonia or Mongolia.

1993 Volkswagen Eurovan

$_57

The Eurovan may be the least-loved generation of VW vans, but it’s grown on me. Similarly, non-poptop campers have become a new object of desire, bringing simplicity and sleek looks while still providing significant capability. This teal van has a convertible bed out of the rear seats as well as a table in the middle, with a rare drivetrain combo in the inline-5 and manual. All told, it looks like a great deal to be able to tackle all kinds of adventures for well under $10k.

1982 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia Diesel

$_57

Westies have been showing up with a wide range of prices recently, from “what are they thinking?” $15k examples to “WHAT ARE THEY THINKING?!” decked-out $80k specialties. Today’s has had a beautiful restoration and a rebuilt 1.9l diesel swap, resulting in a beautiful and original-looking van. The original vehicle only had 52k miles to begin with, and a more powerful and like-new GoWesty engine means this van is ready for the next few decades. All work and modifications are subtle and well-chosen, with a price that seems surprisingly within reason.

1987 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia

$_57 (1)

The Westfalia rollercoaster continues with today’s 1987 model looking like an outstanding value. With many Westfalias reaching above $30k (way above, in some cases), this one comes in at about half that. It’s done its share of roadtripping, with 200k miles on the van, but the engine was rebuilt just 12k miles ago, indicating tons of fun yet to come. Despite some questionable wheel covers, it looks very clean inside and out. Bidding is hot, reflecting a market hungry for affordable Westfalias.
