Sure, the tiptronic probably isn’t what most enthusiasts would specify, but it’s a fine transmission that works as a daily driver without issue. Further, while most enthusiasts would probably prefer getting a “S” model, this entry level Cayman is closer to the original spirit of the line – low weight and low power giving you a fun drive. This particular model seems well equipped with fog lights, 18″ sport wheels and I really love the color combination. There is a pleasant simplicity in the Cayman that is missing from most modern Porsches, and I think the entry level Cayman captures even more of that simplicity. Still, with close to 250hp on tap, it’s no slouch and would give most 1980s and 1990s sports cars a solid run for their money. As a budget entry level Porsche, the bang for the buck on this particular model seems to be pretty good!

Carter featured a similar 2006 Cayman S set up for the track last week. That car was almost $35,000 cheaper than this particular example. This one has less miles and an infinitely cooler livery, so it depends on what you’re looking for. Similar money will certainly net you a 911 set up for the track from multiple generations of the breed, but this is a fairly new, lightly used car looked after by well know specialists. If you want to grab people’s attention on the track, there are few better liveries to do it with than this one.

Motorsport Monday: 2006 Porsche Cayman S

If you want to hit the track in a Porsche, there are many ways to do it. You can buy an old 911, spend a ton of money modifying it and keeping it running. You can buy an even older 911, spend a ton of money modifying it, and even more keeping it running. But if you want a great handling, well set up flat-6 car that’s both competitive and easy on the wallet – in Porsche terms – is to look towards the Cayman. I instructed a friend with a Cayman S a few years ago at Monticello and got a chance to drive his then-new PDK Cayman S back to back with another friend’s track-biased Lotus Elise.

In the twisties, the Cayman didn’t have the go-cart feel of the Lotus for sure, but considering it completely stock, it wasn’t far off and it sure pulled harder on the straights! It was also much more forgiving and less-pucker inspiring than the Lotus; I’ve driven that particular Lotus on several occasions at several different tracks, and while it never got out of shape much at all during my drives the spinning top image was never far from my mind. When I drove the Porsche, that image couldn’t have been farther from my head – it was rock solid and confidence inspiring. Now a few years on, the Cayman has become a very popular race option and today’s example has been fully kitted for the track:

We have over $90K in building this car, start racing today for a fraction of that. I am happy to answer any questions about the car during business hours-843 614 1516

To answer questions we are getting about lap times:

In 2013:

COTA- 2:33.3

ATL- 1:37.3

RRR- 1:17.5

VIR- 2:08.4

more photos at: autometricsmotorsports.com

The seller claims $90K invested, and that sounds about right from the look and build sheet. I’m not a fan of the alternately colored front bumper, but I am a fan of the Interseries classic 917 liveries, and my favorite has to be the Martini Racing “Hippie” 917 colors that appeared at both Le Mans on the 917LH and Watkins Glen on the 917K. Somehow, the swooping lines really suit the Cayman’s profile to me. Otherwise, I can’t say that there’s much I’d change here. It’s a solid build which I think is appropriately priced. It’s treading on early 911 GT3 street model money, and for the long term that’d be the smart car to buy. But if you want to have fun without worrying about long-term collect-ability, it’s pretty hard to beat this package in a Porsche!

2007 Porsche Cayman S

Launched for the 2006 model year, the Boxster based Cayman was Porsche’s answer to enthusiasts looking for a fixed roof sports car that was a bit less expensive than your base 911. There was a fear at first that with performance nearly approaching the 911, the Cayman would eat into 911 sales, but it seems over time both cars have appealed to different buyers for a different reasons. Now in its second generation, first generation Caymans are proving an attractive used buy for those wanting a Porsche at a discount but perhaps aren’t ready to go the classic car route. This Cayman for sale in Massachusetts is the faster S model with the 3.4 liter flat six engine and 320 horsepower. This makes this car good for runs to 60 mph in just under five seconds.

2007 Porsche Cayman S on Cars.com

Beautiful 2007 Cayman S 6-speed manual, with leather interior, Bose sound system, Xenon headlights, Preferred package, heated seats and all weather mats. For sale by original owner excellent condition throughout. One of a collection of sports cars now seeking room in garage.

With only 5,000 miles and one owner, this Cayman S represents a pretty good deal at under $30,000. Most Caymans of this year and caliber are trading hands these days for a few thousand more, usually around the low $30,000 range. Those with Tiptronic transmissions generally bring a little bit less, revealing that enthusiasts in the market for these kind of vehicles still prefer the tried and true manual gearbox.

2011 CTF/R4R Porsche “Rennsport Edition” Cayman S Interseries Racecar For Charity

I was served an ad for this vehicle in my searching of the inter-webs.  How did they know?  You have to love re marketing technology, I remember the good old days when I had to search for those things I desire instead of having them find me.

Anyhow…

This Cayman was built by Porsche Napleton of Westmont to celebrate the Rennsport Reunion IV event.  100% of the proceeds from this auction will benefit Children’s Tumor Foundation.

A one of a kind tribute with proceeds going to charity, I am all in.

2011 Porsche Cayman S Rennsport Edition:

From the seller –

“Unveiled October 14, 2011, the Porsche “Rennsport Edition” Cayman S Cayman Interseries founders  Porsche Napleton of Westmont built specifically to commemorate the Rennsport Reunion IV event. The car was formally unveiled in the Cayman Interseries paddock area by Detlev von Platen, President and CEO of Porsche Cars North America, Gill Campbell, CEO and General Manager of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Ed Napleton, President of the Napleton Auto Group, Ron Barnaba, Napleton Porsche of Westmont General Manager, Porsche racing legend Hurley Haywood and Donohue, a Rolex 24 at Daytona winning Porsche driver.

The one-off “Rennsport Edition” design pays tribute to Porsche’s famous race cars and drivers and the equally iconic circuits on which they raced and won. The entire top of the Rennsport Edition Cayman S features “ghost” images of legendary race tracks from around the world, the stripe on the hood has a list of Porsche factory drivers and other notables from over the years while the roof stripe has a list of all of the factory race cars ever produced. The commemorative No. 4 Cayman was driven throughout Rennsport weekend by Jack Baldwin.

About Porsche Rennsport Reunion IV: Porsche Rennsport Reunion IV will be the world’s greatest gathering of Porsche race cars and the drivers that drove them to victory, held at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca from October 14 to 16, 2011. Hosted by Porsche Cars North America, it will assemble the wide variety of Porsche’s most historic racing models from the nimble 550 Spyder of the mid-1950s through the mighty 917 and 956/962 of the 1970s and 1980s to the highly successful RS Spyder of the last decade.

About Porsche Cars North America: Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (PCNA), based in Atlanta, Ga. is the exclusive U.S. importer of Porsche sports cars, the Cayenne SUV and Panamera Gran Turismo. Established in 1984, it is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Porsche AG, which is headquartered in Stuttgart, Germany, and employs approximately 220 people who provide parts, service, marketing and training for 196 dealers. They, in turn, work to provide Porsche customers a best-in-class experience that is in keeping with the brand’s 63-year history and leadership in the advancement of vehicle performance, safety and efficiency. At the core of this success is Porsche’s proud racing heritage that boasts some 30,000 motorsport wins to date.

About The Cayman Interseries: Established in 2009 by Napleton Porsche of Westmont, Illinois, the Cayman Interseries is North America’s only auto racing championship featuring the exclusive use of the 320-horsepower Porsche Cayman S.  Sanctioned by Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR), the Cayman Interseries conducted its first official season in 2010 and crowned a pair of champion drivers in both the sprint and endurance racing formats. Races are run on legendary circuits such as Daytona, Sebring, Mid-Ohio, Watkins Glen, Road Atlanta, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and other premier venues, primarily on HSR and SVRA event weekends. Every competing Porsche Cayman S is exclusively supplied and prepared by Napleton Porsche and each car competes with an assigned and specific heritage livery themed after a famous Porsche race car from the past.  Learn more about the Cayman Interseries at  www.CaymanInterseries.org.”

Bravo to Napleton Porsche for offering this car up for such a good cause.  Also for doing their part in keeping the Porsche racing legacy alive and well in the states.  Napleton founded the Cayman Interseries in 2009.

It would be easy for a Porsche dealer to shill Cayenne’s and Panamera’s all day so good on Napleton for helping keep the Porsche racing spirit alive.

Bidding currently sits at $65k with roughly a week left to go.  For all you racing fans this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to own a one of a kind piece of Porsche racing hardware while helping a good cause.  Bid early and bid often.

I’m Bored: 2007 Ruf 3400K Coupe 25th Anniversary Edition Coupe

I usually post modern classic German sports car and sport coupe classifieds on this blog that the everyman could likely attain and afford to maintain, upgrade, and enjoy. But nothing really tickled my fancy tonight, so I decided to look upmarket. That’s when I stumbled on this stunning Ruf 3400K for sale on eBaymotors:

quote from seller’s eBayMotors listing:

This is a 2007 Ruf produced and titled 3400K Coupe. Ruf Automobile GmbH has a unique and exclusive relationship with Porsche. Ruf Automobile purchases a “body-in-white” from Porsche- “body-in-white” refers to the most basic structure or frame of the car with nothing installed including body panels, drive train or suspension components. Ruf then completely “hand-crafts” the vehicle from that point at their factory in Pfaffenhausen, Germany, all paint, engine, interior, suspension and unique Ruf components are fitted. This is why Ruf is recognized as a manufacturer and Ruf cars have their own unique VIN.

Oh my God, this car is pure sex! The Cayman S is already a total success story in the automotive press, but when Ruf lays hands to this model and returns a car worthy of it’s own badge and designation, well then, you have a superior and rare machine indeed. Here are the specs according to a European Car article on this model:

RUF 3400K
Layout
Longitudinal mid-engine, rear wheel drive

Engine
3.4-liter flat six, centrifugal-type supercharger, camshaft adjustment, hot-film air mass sensor, three-way catalytic converters with metal substrates, aluminum intake manifold with integrated intercoolers

Transmission
Six-speed manual

Suspension
Adjustable coilovers

Brakes
F: Four-piston calipers, 12.5-inch
front rotors R: Four-piston calipers, 11.8-inch rotors

Wheels and Tires
Ruf alloys 8.5×19 (f), 10×19 (r) Bridgestone Potenza RE050A 235/35 (f), 265/35(r)

Exterior
Ruf front bumper with integral air intakes, rear wing, rear bumper

Interior
Aluminum pedals, gear lever trim, instrument panel

Performance
Peak Power: 400 hp
Peak Torque: 324 lb-ft
0-62 mph: 4.4 sec.
Top Speed: 181 mph

And here’s a Ruf promotional video, which features a Ruf 3400 about midway through the video, which is set to Firestarter by Prodigy. Awesome!

Now that I’m totally smitten with this fantasy car, I’ll be very eager to see what the final bidding reaches. Then I’ll take that number and adjust my keno ticket accordingly!

Update 11.11.08: Updated to the most recent listing, which now carries a $129k buy-it-now (gulp!)
